Because, whatever desire and lust there is for form, abandon it. If you abandon desire and lust, you will also abandon that kind of form, and you will fully understand it. From here, it is spoken extensively up to consciousness. In this way, the suffering of the three times can also be abandoned. If it is said that the afflictions of the past, future, and present can be abandoned, then the only way is this. Or, the meaning is that the afflictions of the past are from previous lives, and the afflictions of the present are from this life. For example, for those who engage in lust, it is said that relying on past time, there are eighteen ways of engaging in lust, which is spoken in terms of past lives. For the afflictions that arise in the present, it is similar to that. These two afflictions also abandon the object of the seed that is placed in order to generate the future in this continuum, so that is also abandoned. For example, it is like the exhaustion of the fully ripened fruit leading to exhaustion. For future suffering, because there is no seed of affliction, it is abandoned because it will never arise. If it is not like that, then what is there to abandon in the past and present? It would seem that the effort would not be meaningful for what has ceased and what is manifestly moving towards cessation. If the unconditioned is only non-existence, then what the Blessed One said, that whatever dharma is conditioned or unconditioned, the best of them is freedom from desire, how can that be explained? How can it be fitting to be the best of non-existents? Do not say that the unconditioned is only non-existence, because it is as we have said. For example, it is said that sound has what was not before, and also what is not after, but although it is said, non-existence cannot be established as existence, and the unconditioned should be viewed in the same way. Some non-existence is also highly praised, because whatever is free from all harm, the tamers should desire it, so it is more excellent than others and deserves to be praised. If the unconditioned is only non-existence, then cessation would not be a noble truth, because there is nothing at all.

It is for this reason. Let's talk a little about what the meaning of the truth of cessation is. Isn't it the meaning of non-perversion? The noble ones see it this way: suffering is just suffering, and no suffering is just no suffering. If these two are seen without perversion, then this itself is the noble truth. What contradiction is there? How can it be both non-existent and the third of the noble truths? How it is a noble truth has already been said. After the second, it is the third because it is seen and indicated. If unconditioned things are merely non-existent, then consciousness focused on space and nirvana will be focused on non-existence. It should be considered that the past and the future exist. If it is thought that the unconditioned is merely a substance, what will happen? Nothing will happen. It will protect the tenets of the Vaibhashikas. If you think this should be protected, will you protect the gods? It will become an unreal, completely fabricated thing. Why? Because, like form and feeling, its own nature is not perceived, and like the eye, its function is not perceived. How can it be thoroughly conceived that the cessation of something is this? Because there are no things like cause and effect, it has no connection with it, it is just the cessation of something. If it is another thing, then the attainment of which affliction is cut off, and the attainment of which cessation, is called its own. So, what is the cause of wanting to attain it? The sutra says that a monk who attains nirvana by seeing the Dharma, how can he attain non-existence? Because of attaining the antidote, and because of attaining a basis that is extremely contrary to the birth of samsara, it is called attaining nirvana. The scriptures also say that it is merely non-existence, saying: Like this, this suffering is completely abandoned, definitely abandoned, purified, exhausted, free from attachment, ceased, pacified, stopped, without continuity with other suffering, without taking, without arising, this is, the aggregates.
