Because it doesn't exist. The Sautrāntikas say: The Blessed One did not say that the unconditioned (འདུས་མ་བྱས།, asaṃskṛta, asaṃskṛta, non-created) is the cause of anything, but rather said in other ways that it is not the cause. How did he say it? If the causes that produce form and the conditions that produce form are also impermanent, then how can the form that arises from relying on these impermanent causes and conditions be permanent? It is the same up to consciousness, so it is said. If that is the case, then the unconditioned will not be the object-condition of consciousness either. Because it is said to be arising. Because it turns white, it is said that the causes that produce consciousness and the conditions that produce consciousness are also impermanent, but it is not said that the conditions of consciousness are also impermanent. The causes are also, whatever produces the cause, those alone are impermanent, because it appears like this, so the unconditioned is also merely a non-obstructing thing, is it not denying the very nature of being a causative cause? The sūtra says that it is an object-condition, but it does not say that it is a non-obstructing cause, therefore, the unconditioned is not established as a causal thing in the sūtra. Although it is not said, it is not prohibited. Most of the sūtras have disappeared, how is it said? How can this be determined? Even if it is grasped, what is called separation? Didn't you say before that it is the cessation of separate examination? At that time, what is the cessation of separate examination? It is said that it is whatever is separated. Now, what is separation? It is said that it is whatever is the cessation of separate examination, so this mutually dependent statement is not capable of clarifying its own nature, therefore, its own nature should be expressed in other ways. Its own nature is only to be known separately by the noble ones with their own wisdom, what is called separation, what is called the cessation of separate examination, and that there are other things besides examination and virtue, etc., that is all that can be said. The Sautrāntikas say that all unconditioned things are only non-substantial, it is not another substance like form and feeling, etc. So what is it? Merely untouchable is space, like not obstructing in the dark

If it exists, it is called space. When subtle growth and the arising of what has already arisen cease, and others do not arise due to the power of individual examination, this is cessation through individual examination. When something does not arise solely because individual examination is absent and the conditions are incomplete, this is cessation not through individual examination, such as the remaining similar beings who die in the intermediate state. Other schools say that there is a power of wisdom to prevent subtle growth from arising. Therefore, this is cessation through individual examination. The non-arising of suffering is solely because there is no subtle growth as a condition for arising, and therefore it has no power of wisdom. Therefore, this is cessation not through individual examination. They say that this also cannot be established without individual examination, so this is solely cessation through individual examination. Others say that what has previously arisen and later disappears is cessation not through individual examination because of its own and others' cessation. They say that for that realization, cessation not through individual examination will only become impermanent, because if it does not perish, it will not exist. Is it not the case that cessation through individual examination also becomes impermanent because individual examination precedes it? That is not because individual examination precedes it; it was previously individual examination, but the non-arising of future births is not. What then? Those non-arisings have always existed. If phenomena would arise without individual examination, they will not arise even if individual examination arises. For this, the power of individual examination is this: just as without obstacles, the conditions are objects that obstruct arising. If only non-arising is nirvana, then how can we interpret the words of the sutras: these five faculties should be fully relied upon, cultivated, and practiced many times, and then one will abandon the suffering that has arisen in the past, future, and present? Abandonment is nirvana. Non-arising is only the future, not the past and present. Although it is also said that way, the Blessed One said that suffering is abandoned because the afflictions aimed at it are abandoned.
