If asked, is there a later-arising cause that is not (a prior cause)? Answer: Yes. For example, for a future person who has the forbearance of knowing the Dharma of suffering, (their forbearance of knowing the Dharma) is like (the present) knowledge of the Dharma of suffering. Like this, the previous result, or rather, there is no future cause with the same potential. If asked, do previously arisen uncontaminated dharmas have a cause that is not a later-arising uncontaminated dharma? Answer: Yes. For example, the large and the small (uncontaminated dharmas). For example, the complete degeneration from a complete fruit, at the time of producing the next fruit, and the attainment of the knowledge of the Dharma of suffering that arises together with the subsequent moment, is like the attainment of the forbearance of the knowledge of the Dharma of suffering. Because it is inferior. Thus it is said. The cause with the same potential has been explained. The concurrent cause is mind and mental factors. If that is the case, then (minds and mental factors) arising from different times and streams would become the fault of being concurrent causes to each other. If (you) say: Then, (they) are the same in aspect and object. If that is the case, it will also become the fault of being the same (thing). If (you) say: Then, (they) are of the same time. If that is the case, then for looking at things like the crescent moon, it will also become the fault that (minds and mental factors) arising from different streams also become concurrent causes to each other. Therefore, (they) are those with the same basis (mind and mental factors). Those minds and mental factors that have the same basis, those are concurrent causes to each other. The so-called "same" means not different. For example, the basis of eye consciousness, that is, the moment of the eye faculty, is the same as that, and the basis of the concurrent feeling and other (mental factors) is also it. Similarly, for consciousness and its concurrent (mental factors), it should be understood in the same way until the moment of mind. Whatever is a concurrent cause is also a co-emergent cause. Again, in what sense is it a co-emergent cause? In what sense is it a concurrent cause? Answer: In the sense of being a result to each other, it is a co-emergent cause. Just as drivers advance together on the road with each other's strength. The meaning of being concurrent by five similarities is the concurrent cause. Just as those drivers similarly combine in the act of enjoying food and so on.

It is like that. If one is missing, all the same conditions cannot be fully possessed, so this is the entity of their cause. What is the pervasive cause? What is called "pervasive" is affliction. In their respective positions, there are five pervasive ones. The previously arisen dharmas of the pervasive nature are the dharmas of affliction. They are the cause of the pervasiveness of the later ones. These will also be explained in detail below in the Abhidharmakosha. Because this is the common cause of the dharmas of affliction, it is distinctly different from the cause of equal share. Because it is also the cause of other classes, through their power, afflictions of other classes will also arise. If it is said that the afflictive dharmas of noble beings also arise from the pervasive cause, then the Kashmiris say that all afflictive dharmas arise from the cause to be abandoned by seeing. For example, in the Vibhasha, what are the dharmas that arise from the cause to be abandoned by seeing? They are the dharmas of affliction, and the maturation of the dharmas to be abandoned by seeing. What are the dharmas that arise from the cause of the unspecified? They are the unspecified conditioned dharmas and the unwholesome ones. From the truth of suffering, those that have the view of the aggregation as a cause, and also those that do not have the view of the aggregation as a cause, from the view of the aggregation to the birth, aging, abiding, and impermanence of those dharmas, whatever afflictions are in the truth of suffering are included. So, if it is said that the imputed explanation is an unwholesome dharma, is it only an unwholesome cause?

What is the cause of maturation? The cause of maturation is non-virtue and defiled virtue. Non-virtuous ones and virtuous dharmas with defilements are the cause of maturation, because they are of the nature of maturation. Why do unspecified dharmas not accomplish maturation? Because they are weak, like rotten seeds. Why are undefiled ones not? Because they are not moistened by craving, like dry seeds that have not been moistened. With what kind of corresponding maturation will non-associated factors manifest and accomplish? The remaining ones accomplish because they have both natures, like dry seeds that have been moistened. How is this known? Is a cause of maturation a cause of maturation? Or is maturation itself the cause, therefore the cause of maturation? Then what will happen? If a cause of maturation is a cause of maturation, then there will be no saying that it is born from the maturation of the eye. Why? Because it is born from karma, and karma is not the nature of maturation. Or, if maturation itself is the cause, therefore the cause of maturation, then there will be no saying of the maturation of karma. Why? Because maturation is the cause, and maturation is not the nature of karma either. Either way is fine, as previously stated. Again, what is the meaning of maturation? Maturing differently is maturation. In the desire realm, the cause of maturation, one aggregate with one result, is acquisition and their arising, etc. Two aggregates with one result are bodily and verbal karma and their arising, etc. Four aggregates with one result are mind and mental factors, virtue and non-virtue, along with their arising, etc. In the form realm, the cause of maturation, one aggregate with one maturation, is acquisition and the attainment of non-perception, along with arising, etc. Two aggregates are
