Whether the future is substantially existent or non-existent needs to be examined. Only then can it be established whether it produces or does not produce. Even if it is assumed to exist, how can it be established in the future if production is taking place? Therefore, the characteristics of the future should also be explained. If what has occurred is something that has perished, how can it be established in the present? Therefore, the characteristics of the present should also be explained. If abiding and so on occur simultaneously, then in just one moment, the Dharma would have the fault of abiding, aging, and decaying. Because at the time when this abides, it is made to abide by abiding, and at the same time, it is made to age by aging, and it is made to decay by impermanence itself, then at that time, is this abiding? Or is it aging? Or is it decaying? If someone says that birth and so on act sequentially, then according to that statement, a single moment would be harmed. Or, as they say, how easily our moment can perfect all of this! Even so, from arising together with them, for a while, abiding makes it abide, but aging does not make it age, and impermanence itself does not make it decay. Why is this? Because abiding has power. Why does it later become powerless? Because this, together with the Dharma, is destroyed by impermanence itself. Because the action has already been done, it cannot be done again, just like birth. It is reasonable to say that birth cannot, because what birth is to produce has already been brought here, so it cannot be given again. Abiding can make what is to abide abide forever. Therefore, it is unreasonable that what cannot be done. Or, what is it that obstructs this? It is aging and impermanence itself. If they have power, then it can only be earlier. Even if the action of abiding ceases, they do not abide, and the Dharma does not abide, then how can they act on anything? Or what are they to do? Because abiding completely holds it, the Dharma, as soon as it arises, does not decay, and if it lets it go, then it will certainly not abide, therefore this is its decay.
