Neither is both present. Furthermore, why does the sutra say: "Venerable monks, which sentient beings neither die by themselves nor are killed by others?" Shariputra, they are those who approach the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. If it is said like that, then other meditations and formless absorptions, self-death is the noble path of one's own realm, and being killed by others is the approximation of a higher realm, but there, neither exists, so it is said. If that is the case, then in that case, isn't the noble path of another realm also killed by others? If that is the case, then what is said at the end includes those and so on. Some think that the end also includes the beginning, like the gods of the Brahma host, which is said to be the first birth of happiness. Some think that the beginning also includes the end, like the gods of clear light, which is said to be the second birth of happiness. Here, the sound of "like this" is like a metaphor, so it may be understood to be more than this, because the dharma of metaphor, even if it is only one, can also show things that are similar to it. The sound of "like this" is not here, so it cannot be easily added. If the sound of "like this" is a metaphor, then there are also sentient beings with different bodies and different perceptions, like humans and some gods, which cannot be obtained here, so it should only be regarded as an approximate indication. It's too much, so let's stop here. The explanation of life is finished. The characteristics are birth, aging, abiding, and impermanence. These four are the characteristics of compounded dharmas, and whatever dharma has these is considered a compounded dharma. The opposite is uncompounded dharma. Among them, birth produces that dharma, abiding makes it exist, aging makes it decay, and impermanence makes it perish. Doesn't the sutra say that these three are the characteristics of compounded dharmas? There, the fourth should also be mentioned. There, what was not said? It is said: abiding. Then, abiding others

That which is called "change" refers to this. This is a synonym for aging, just like "the arising of birth" and "the destruction of impermanence itself." In the Sutra Pitaka, in order to cause aversion, all those dharmas that enter in order to cause the change of time of conditioned things are called characteristics. Birth causes conditioned things to arise from the future time to the present time. Aging and impermanence itself cause conditioned things to go from the present time to the past, that is, they destroy by weakening them. For example, a person who enters a dense forest has three enemies, one of whom takes him out of the forest, and two of whom take his life, so it is said. Abiding is like not wanting to separate, those conditioned things embrace and abide. Therefore, this is not established as the characteristic of conditioned phenomena. Because unconditioned phenomena also have abiding in their own nature. Others think that in the Sutra Pitaka, abiding and aging are combined, saying, "Abiding is change itself," as one characteristic. Why is it necessary to say this? Because among these, this is the basis of attachment, therefore, in order not to be attached to it, it is shown together with this one who is like splendor and the black-eared mother. Therefore, I think that the characteristics of conditioned phenomena are only four. If it is said that birth and so on are also conditioned phenomena, therefore there will be other births and so on? Indeed, there are, that is, the birth of birth and so on. For those, there are also the birth of birth, the aging of aging, the abiding of abiding, and the impermanence of impermanence itself, these four conforming characteristics. If other births and so on are extended to those as well, then for each one there will be four characteristics, and there will be the fault of having no end, will there not? There will be no such fault, like this, they merge into eight dharmas and one dharma. Birth and so on merge into eight dharmas. What does it mean to merge? It is action, that is, the ability of a person. The birth of birth and so on merge into one dharma. How do they merge? They merge into the characteristic and conformity contained in the dharma itself.

Nine (things) arise together with eight characteristics, among which arising produces eight other dharmas besides itself. The arising of arising only produces arising itself. For example, some domestic hens hatch many chicks, while others hatch few, just like that. Abiding also causes eight other dharmas besides itself to abide, and the abiding of abiding only causes abiding itself to abide. Similarly, aging and impermanence should also be applied analogously, so it is said that it will not become an endless fault. The Sutra masters say that this is like walking in the sky, because the things that have the characteristic of arising, etc., are not real as they are analyzed. Why? Because there is no valid cognition, and there is no valid cognition that they are real, just as there is no manifest perception, inference, or trustworthy scripture like the dharmas of form, etc.
