It will become the support of consciousness. If so, then in the formless realms, since there is no warmth, consciousness will become unsupported. Its support will become karma. Some believe that the support of consciousness is only warmth. Some think it is only karma, this wanting whatever one wants is unattainable, it is already said. How is it said? It is said that before death, all consciousness will mature. Therefore, life, which is the cause of those two, exists. Although it is not said that it does not exist, there is no other substance. So, what is that? It is the time that the similar kind dwells, drawn by the karma of the three realms. It should dwell for so long, like how long the similar kind drawn by karma exists, it is called life, just like what is drawn by the time of ripening of grains, and what is drawn by the time of existence after an arrow is shot. The so-called formation refers to some differences in qualities that arise on the arrow. Because of its power, one would think that it will continue to move forward until it falls, because it is unique and there is no obstacle, so the time difference of going to other places very fast, very fast, and extremely fast is also unreasonable, and falling is also unreasonable. If it is said that the wind causes an obstacle to it, since the wind has no difference, it is unreasonable that it either falls immediately or never falls. Like this, life is only another substance, it is said like this. Also, is it only that life is exhausted that one will die? Or are there other reasons? In the Establishment Treatise, it is said that one dies when life is exhausted, and there are also those who do not die because merit is exhausted, etc., four situations are mentioned. The first situation is that the karma of life maturing is completely exhausted. The second situation is that the karma of enjoyment maturing is completely exhausted. The third situation is that both are exhausted. The fourth situation is that suffering has not been completely abandoned. It should also be said that life is abandoned. When life is exhausted, merit being exhausted has no effect on death. Therefore, if both are exhausted, it is said that one dies from both being exhausted. In the Entering Wisdom Treatise, it is said that life depends on the continuum.

Should it be said to be entering the womb? Should it be said to be born once and abide? It is said: Beings in the desire realm who have not entered into the samadhi of the unconscious and the cessation samadhi, depend on the continuum, and should be said to be entering the womb. Those who have entered into samadhi, and beings in the form and formless realms, should be said to be born once and abide. What is the meaning of this statement by the Blessed One? Those for whom abiding in the body causes harm, that is the first case because it depends on the continuum. Those for whom there is no harm in abiding in the body, that is the second case because they abide as they were born. The Kashmiris say that the one with sudden occurrences is the first, and the one without sudden occurrences is the second. Therefore, untimely death exists. The sutra says that there are four ways of obtaining a body: There are also those who obtain a body and die by themselves, not by being killed by others, thus dividing into four categories. In the desire realm, gods who are intoxicated with play, and those whose minds are extremely agitated, will only die by themselves. They will die and transmigrate from the state of extreme joy and extreme agitation of mind, and there will be no other situation. It should also be said of the Buddhas, because they pass away by themselves. Those who are in the womb and at the doorway will only be killed by others. Most other beings in the desire realm have both situations. All intermediate beings, and beings in the form and formless realms, and some beings in the desire realm, such as hell beings, and those in Uttarakuru whose voices are unpleasant, those who have attained the path of seeing, those who are loving and those who have attained cessation, those who have entered the samadhi of unconsciousness, the king's hermit, the king's messenger, those taught by the Victorious One, those who uphold the Dharma, the excellent ones, the upholders, the merchant's son named Youthful Fame, the healers, and so on, the bodhisattvas of the last existence, the mother of the bodhisattva residing in the womb, the wheel-turning king, and the mother of the wheel-turning king in the womb.
