It is neither to be experienced in another place, nor is it uncertain. Anyone who cultivates and completely deteriorates this (meditation) will undoubtedly arise again, and will be born among the unconscious beings. It is said so. Therefore, obtaining it is not certain. Moreover, it is considered that only ordinary people can obtain it, not the noble ones. The noble ones regard this as a place of downfall, so they do not enter the unconscious equipoise, but those with the mind of renunciation enter into it. Furthermore, if a noble one obtains the fourth dhyana, can they also obtain the past and future (unconscious meditation) like the dhyana? For the time being, others also cannot obtain it. Why? Because even if familiar, it must be accomplished through great manifest effort, and because it is the state of being without mind. The definition of "obtained at one time, exists at one time" is its definition. Just like the Pratimoksha vows, only the present (unconscious meditation) can be obtained. In the second moment and so on, as long as it is not abandoned, it can be continuously obtained, and it is also related to the past. Because it is the state of being without mind, the future (unconscious meditation) cannot be obtained. Now, what is the cessation equipoise? Just like the unconscious meditation, "cessation" is also the same. What aspect does the word "same" refer to? It refers to the cessation of mind and mental factors. The difference between the two is this: this (unconscious meditation) is for the purpose of abiding, and one enters into it by first generating the mind of peaceful abiding; while that (cessation meditation) is entered into by first generating the mind of renunciation. Moreover, that (cessation meditation) is in the realm of the fourth dhyana, while this (unconscious meditation) is born in the peak of existence, and is only in the realm of the unconscious and neither conscious nor unconscious realms. This (unconscious meditation) is virtuous. It is only virtuous, neither afflicted nor indeterminate. Although it is virtuous, it is of two kinds of experience and uncertain. That is, experiencing the result after birth, and experiencing the result at other times, that is, experiencing the result in two periods, and because it is a Vipaka result, it is also uncertain. If one completely attains Nirvana here, then forever

It will only become immature. Its maturation is the four aggregates of the peak of existence. Moreover, ordinary individuals who are not noble cannot generate the cessation attainment, because they fear annihilation and also because it is generated by the power of the noble path. Nirvana in this very life is because of faith in it. Moreover, this attainment of the noble ones is not achieved through detachment from desire. How is it achieved then? It is achieved through effort. This is only achieved through effort, so neither the past nor the future can be achieved, because it is achieved through the power of the mind. Did the Blessed One also arise from effort? It is said: No. How is it then? It is achieved through the enlightenment of the Sage. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, attained this simultaneously with the knowledge of cessation. There is nothing that arises from effort for the Buddhas, because all the manifestations of their qualities and achievements depend solely on their intention. Therefore, all of them are attained through detachment from desire. Now, if the Blessed One did not generate the cessation attainment, how could he be liberated from both aspects at the time of attaining the knowledge of cessation? He can be liberated, because he possesses it as if it has already been generated. Some Westerners say that it is only generated by the Bodhisattva in the initial stage of learning. Why is this not accepted? If that were the case, then the statement of the upholders of discipline, the close attendants, would have to say that the Tathagata first generated the cessation attainment and then generated the knowledge of cessation. This statement is taken as authoritative. It is not so in the beginning. The Kashmiris say that it is not permissible to generate it in that way. Why? Because it is attained by thirty-four moments. The Bodhisattva attains enlightenment in accordance with thirty-four moments of the mind, that is, sixteen moments are needed for the direct realization of the truth, and nine aspects of afflictions are abandoned when detaching from desire for the peak of existence.
