Because generality is not a material thing, it is invisible. Even with wisdom, it cannot be completely determined. It also encompasses the different kinds of sentient beings. Even if it exists, what can it do? Furthermore, why not wish for the generality of non-sentient beings? For example, barley, wheat, lentils, broad beans, mangoes, papayas, iron, gold, etc., are all because their respective kinds are the same. How can these mutually different generalities be attributed to generality without any difference? If that were the case, it would be what the particularists have elucidated. Their tenet is that there is a thing called "universal," therefore, the same cognition will arise for different things. Although they are one, they can be applied to many things, and that is their characteristic. The particularists say that even if it is elucidated, or even if it is not elucidated, because the sutra says that generality exists. The Blessed One also said that it would be good if a hundred people had such generality. Although it was said like that, it was not said that it is a different thing. So what is it? It is only those fabrications that are considered to be humans, etc., similar to the generality of barley, etc. But it is not said like that. So, what is called the non-percipient? The non-percipient is non-perception, the cessation of mind and mental factors. The mind and mental factors of beings born in the realm of non-perception cease, and that is the thing called the non-percipient, which can prevent future mind and mental factors from arising until other times, like stopping a river. That is also a kind of fruition. What is the fruition of? It is the fruition of the non-perceptual attainment. Which are the beings that dwell among the non-percipient beings? That is the one with great results. Which beings on one side have sentient consciousness?

Some of those gods who abide there are called Great Fruit, like a special meditation. If asked, will they never become conscious? Answer: They become conscious at the time of birth and at the time of death. The sutra says: These beings abide for a long time, and after consciousness arises, they die from that place. They also die from there like waking up from a long sleep, because the previous formations of absorption are completely exhausted, and because they have not accumulated previously, like an arrow shot that falls to the ground after its force is exhausted, they will be born in the desire realm, and not elsewhere. If someone is born there, then he will inevitably have the karma to experience the other results of actions performed in the desire realm, for example, he will experience being born as a god of unpleasant sounds in the north. Furthermore, what is said to be absorption? What are those absorptions? The answer is the absorption of non-perception and the absorption of cessation. What is the absorption of non-perception? The answer is, just as the non-perceiver is said to be the one who stops the mind and mental factors, so too is the absorption of non-perception. Because it is the absorption of non-perceivers or because it possesses non-perception, it is the absorption of non-perception, that is, the cessation of mind and mental factors. The word "likewise" is only used to point out the similarity. That absorption is in the final meditation, the final meditation being the fourth dhyana, and it belongs there, and not elsewhere. Why is this called absorption? Because one desires to emerge. One thinks that one will definitely emerge from it, therefore one enters into absorption desiring liberation. Since the non-perceiver is a result of maturation, it is established as being unteachable. This is virtuous. The absorption of non-perception is only virtuous. Its result of maturation is the accomplishment of the five aggregates among non-perceptual beings. Even though it is virtuous, it is only to be experienced after birth. It is only experienced after birth, not in this life or in the next.
