Other than birth, and not, is it for the sake of distinguishing? Such words are spoken. Saying "those born from the mind," what are those born from the mind? Five mental factors, because of the difference in many grounds, etc. The mind-born are of five kinds: those with many grounds, those with many virtuous grounds, those with many afflicted grounds, those with many non-virtuous grounds, and those with grounds of minor afflictions. Ground means the place of opportunity; whatever is the place of opportunity for something is called its ground. Therefore, these have many grounds, so they are many, those that arise in all minds. What are those that arise in all minds? Feeling, thought, perception, intention, contact, wisdom, mindfulness, attention, interest, and concentration, in all minds. These ten dharmas arise together in every moment of mind, it is said. Among them, feeling is the three kinds of experience: pleasure, pain, and neither pleasure nor pain. Thought is the mind manifestly constructing. Perception is knowing together, that is, apprehending the characteristic of an object. Intention is the desire to do. Contact is the contact born from the gathering of object, sense power, and consciousness. Wisdom is intelligence, that is, skillfully distinguishing dharmas. Mindfulness is not forgetting the object. Attention is the mind's engagement. Interest is desire. Concentration is the one-pointedness of mind. The difference between mind and mental factors is subtle, so it is difficult to completely distinguish them even in continuous phenomena, let alone in momentary phenomena. For example, even with material things like medicine, it is difficult to accurately perceive the differences in the tastes of many flavors, which can be perceived by the senses, let alone dharmas that are not material and can be perceived by the mind. These have many virtuous grounds, so these are the virtuous many grounds, those that always arise in virtuous minds. What are those? Faith, conscientiousness, and extreme

Diligence always arises from virtuous actions. These dharmas always arise in a virtuous mind. Among them, faith is the clarity of mind. Others say that it is manifest belief in truth, the Three Jewels, karma, and its results. Vigilance is the cultivation of virtuous dharmas. What is cultivated other than these? It is the cherishing of these themselves. In the sutras of other schools, it is said to be the protection of all minds. Pliancy is the workability of the mind. Isn't it also said in the sutra that there is pliancy of the body? Although it is not said, it should be understood in the same way as understanding the feelings of the body. How can that become a limb of enlightenment? Well, there it should be known that only the workability of the body is the pliancy of the body. Now, how is it called a limb of enlightenment? Because it is in accordance with the limbs of enlightenment. The workability of the body leads to the workability of the mind, a limb of enlightenment. Is there a similar appearance elsewhere? It is said that there is. For example, the Blessed One said that joy and the place of joy are limbs of perfect enlightenment, and that anger and the reason for anger are said to be obstacles of harmful thoughts, and that right view, thought, and effort are said to be aggregates of wisdom. Although thought and effort are not the nature of wisdom, they obtain its name because they are in accordance with it. Similarly, the pliancy of the body also obtains the name of a limb of enlightenment because it is in accordance with the limbs of enlightenment. Equanimity is the equality of mind, and the spontaneous accomplishment of mind. Now, how can it be that the mind itself has both the nature of effort and attention, and also equanimity, which is the nature of non-effort? Isn't it said that the distinction between these is difficult to understand? Although it is difficult to understand, there is understanding. Although contradictory, it is not contradictory, which is very difficult to understand. Effort arises in other places, and non-effort also arises in other places.
