In the world, there is no single thing called "life" as the substance of life. If it were not so, the term "formation" would not be used. Furthermore, why did the Blessed One relinquish and bless the formations of life? He relinquished them to demonstrate his mastery over death, and he blessed only three months to demonstrate his mastery over life. He did not continue to bless them because there was no further need for taming. Also, he made the vow that if he wished to remain for a kalpa or more, having cultivated the four miraculous feet in such a way, he could fulfill that vow. The Vaibhashikas say that it was to demonstrate victory over the aggregates and the Lord of Death's demons. Under the Bodhi tree, he conquered the afflictions and the demons of the son of the gods. Incidentally, that concludes the digression. Now, let us begin the main text: Twelve are two. What are the twelve? The last eight and displeasure. Except for the last eight, such as faith, and displeasure, the twelve other than the life faculty are of two kinds: they are both resultant and non-resultant. Among them, the seven, such as the eye, that arise from growth are non-resultant. The rest are resultant. The faculties of mind, suffering, pleasure, joy, and equanimity, as well as those who are virtuous and afflicted, and those who are practitioners, artisans, and emanations, are non-resultant as appropriate. The rest are resultant. It is established that the rest, except for the life faculty and the twelve such as the eye, are called "non-resultant." If displeasure is non-resultant, then there are three kinds of karma: karma that will be experienced as pleasure, karma that will be experienced as displeasure, and karma that will be experienced as equanimity. How should we interpret this sutra? It is spoken in terms of what is associated with it. Karma associated with displeasure is karma that will be experienced as displeasure. For example, contact associated with pleasure will be experienced as pleasure.

It's like a fence. So, will the actions that cause one to experience happiness and equanimity also be like that? Just as happiness is, it depends on it. Even if it is similar, there is no fault. Even if it is ripening, there is no fault. Because there is no opportunity, know that it is like that. If it is said that unhappiness is not ripening, then what reason is there for this? Unhappiness is produced by various kinds of pervasive thoughts, but ripening is not like that. Happiness is also the same as that, so it will not be ripening. So, if unhappiness is said to be ripening, then those who commit the five heinous crimes, therefore generating unhappiness, will that action be ripening? Unhappiness is also the same as that, if happiness is said to be ripening, then those who perform virtuous deeds, therefore generating happiness, will that action be ripening? So, for those who are free from desire, it is impossible to have unhappiness, because ripening is not like that. The happiness of those people has not been pointed out, so what kind of ripening would it be? The Vaibhashikas say: In any case, happiness has the opportunity to ripen, no matter how long it lasts. But unhappiness never arises in any way, so they say that unhappiness has no ripening. Among them, the eighth is the life faculty, and the others in the happy realms are the ripening of happiness, and in the bad realms are the ripening of unhappiness. The mind faculty is both, the ripening of both. The faculties of pleasure, joy, and equanimity are the ripening of virtue. The faculty of suffering is the ripening of non-virtue. In the happy realms, the two characteristics of non-virtue have obtained that position, but it is not a faculty, because it is abandoned by virtue. That is the end. This is to be said: How many faculties are with ripening? How many are without ripening? If it is said that the unhappiness that was just mentioned, that one is with ripening, that only one is

It is only that which is accompanied by maturation. It should be understood that the word "ni" is combined with the meaning of "only" in a different order. That is, it is not without prediction, nor is it without equality, therefore it is not without leakage, therefore Displeasure is not without maturation. Ten are of two kinds. Some are accompanied by maturation, and some are without maturation. What are the ten? Mind and other feelings, such as faith. By mentioning other feelings, it refers to feelings other than displeasure. Feelings such as faith, diligence, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom. Among them, mind, pleasure, delight, and equanimity, which are unwholesome and with outflows, are accompanied by maturation. Those without outflows are without maturation. The faculty of suffering, which is wholesome and unwholesome, is accompanied by maturation. The unspecified is without maturation. Faith and so on, which are with outflows, are accompanied by maturation. Those without outflows are without maturation. The others are without maturation, thus it is established. Are two wholesome? Are two unwholesome? For the time being, one is eight wholesome. Five such as faith, and three such as the faculty of complete knowledge. Two are displeasure. It is also wholesome and also unwholesome. Mind and other feelings are three kinds. Wholesome, unwholesome, and unspecified. The other is one kind. What is the other? Eye and so on, and the eighth life, those are only unspecified. Among these faculties, which faculty belongs to which realm? Except for the stainless, it belongs to the desire realm. For the time being, one, except for the three faculties of complete knowledge without outflows, the faculties should be known to be associated with desire. That is only not associated. Male and female faculties and suffering, etc. Except for the form realm. Also add except for the stainless. Suffering, etc., are suffering and displeasure. In that form realm, there is the law of intercourse.
