It is the faculty of doing. Abiding is the faculty of knowing all. It is said that the faculty endowed with knowing all is what closely enjoys. Therefore, there are so many faculties, and for that very reason, their order is also such. The words of speech are not the faculty itself, because they depend on the difference of learning. Hands, feet, taking, and walking are not different, because they themselves are those; when they occur in different situations, they are called taking and walking. Just as snakes and others do not have hands and feet, yet they can still take and walk. The buttocks are also not the faculty for excreting, because all heavy objects existing in the sky will fall, and the wind can also blow them. The genitals are also not the faculty for universal joy, because joy is produced by the primary female faculty. The anus, teeth, eye ducts, and joints, as well as actions such as swallowing, biting, opening, smiling, contracting, and stretching, if they were the faculty itself, or if all things that are causes were necessarily the faculty of their own actions, then it would be unreasonable to infer that language and so on are the faculty itself. Among them, the eyes and so on that are related to the male faculty have already been explained. The life faculty, because it is not corresponding, will only be explained within the category of the non-corresponding. Faith and so on will be explained within the category of mental factors. Happiness and so on, and the faculty of knowing all, and so on, need to be explained; these should be discussed. The body's feeling that is not tranquil is the faculty of suffering. Non-tranquil means harming, which is a synonym for suffering. Tranquil is happiness. The body's feeling that is tranquil is the faculty of pleasure. Tranquil means benefiting, which is a synonym for happiness. In the third dhyana, the mind's feeling is the faculty of pleasure. In the third dhyana, the mind's feeling of tranquility itself is the faculty of pleasure, because there are no five aggregates of consciousness there, so there is no body feeling. In other dhyanas, it is happiness. Dhyana

Third, other than the desire realm and the first and second dhyanas, whatever mental feeling is tranquil is the faculty of joy. In the third dhyana, because of being free from the desire for joy, there is only the faculty of pleasure, but not joy, because joy is joy. The non-tranquility of mind is displeasure; equanimity is the middle. Neither tranquil nor non-tranquil, neither suffering nor pleasant feeling is called the middle, which is the faculty of equanimity. Is it of the body or of the mind? It is said: It is of both. Why are these combined into one faculty? Because of impermanence. Mental pleasure and pain mostly arise from conceptual thought, but not bodily pleasure and pain. Because of the power of objects, they also arise in arhats. Therefore, those different faculties, bodily and mental equanimity, arise naturally only from non-conceptual thought, so they are made into one faculty. Bodily pleasure also benefits others, and mental pleasure also benefits others. Similarly, bodily pain also harms others, and mental pain also harms others. Equanimity does not have that distinction, therefore, equanimity has no distinction, so there is no difference. The paths of seeing, meditation, and no-more-learning have nine. There are three. Mind, pleasure, joy, and equanimity, as well as the five such as faith and the nine faculties, those nine faculties are called three faculties in the three paths, that is, the path of seeing is called the faculty of what-is-to-be-known. The path of meditation is called the faculty of knowledge. The path of no-more-learning is called the faculty of having knowledge. Why? Because the path of seeing is entering into what-is-to-be-known. The path of meditation does not have what was not previously seen to be made known, but in order to abandon the subtle remaining parts, it makes it known. The path of no-more-learning is the realization that everything is known, or because this person has the behavior and manner of protecting all that is known, it is the faculty of having knowledge.
