So, among these six consciousnesses, which are to be cognized by which consciousnesses? It is said: Because there are two consciousnesses that cognize, there are five. Forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile objects are experienced in order by the consciousnesses of the eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body, and then cognized by the consciousness of the mind. Thus, each of them is to be cognized by two consciousnesses. The remaining thirteen realms, because they are not the objects of the five aggregates of consciousness, it will be explained that they are to be cognized by the consciousness of the mind alone. What are the permanent phenomena? What are the impermanent phenomena? It is said: Although there is no realm that is entirely permanent, unconditioned phenomena are permanent. Therefore, one part of the dharma realm is permanent, and the rest are impermanent. What are the faculties? What are not the faculties? It is said: Half of the dharmas and which are the superior faculties among the twelve sources. In the Sutra, it says: the faculty of the eye, the faculty of the ear, the faculty of the nose, the faculty of the tongue, the faculty of the body, the faculty of the mind, the faculty of the female, the faculty of the male, the faculty of life, the faculty of pleasure, the faculty of pain, the faculty of joy, the faculty of sorrow, the faculty of equanimity, the faculty of faith, the faculty of effort, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of concentration, the faculty of wisdom, the faculty of the about-to-know-the-unknown, the faculty of knowledge,

Next, I will explain. The remaining five realms and the aspect of the Dharma realm are established as not being faculties. In the commentary on Vasubandhu's Abhidharmakośa, the chapter called "Dhātu-nirdeśa" is the first chapter of the Kośa. When explaining the faculties, what is the meaning of "faculty"? "Faculty" means supreme power. Because it can act independently, it is a faculty. Therefore, the meaning of acting independently is the meaning of faculty. Among these, which faculty acts independently on what? The first five faculties act independently on four things. First, the eye and ear faculties each act independently on four things. Because the blind and the deaf are not of a beautiful nature, they act independently on the adornment of the body; because they abandon carelessness after seeing and hearing, they act independently on the protection of the body; they generate those that are the same as and possessed by eye-consciousness and ear-consciousness; they act independently on the common and uncommon causes of seeing forms and hearing sounds. The nose, tongue, and body are the same as before, acting independently on adornment; in order to fully enjoy their food, they act independently on protecting the body; they generate those that are the same as and possessed by nose-consciousness, etc.; they act independently on the common and uncommon causes of smelling odors, tasting flavors, and touching tactile objects. The four are reduced to two. The male and female faculties, the life faculty, and the mind faculty each act independently on two things. First, the male and female faculties act independently on the distinction and difference of sentient beings. Among them, the distinction of sentient beings refers to whether they are male or female. The difference of sentient beings refers to the difference in shape, sound, and behavior, such as breasts. Others say that they act independently on defilement and purification. For example, for those who do not possess these, the degenerate eunuchs, hermaphrodites, and bisexuals, there is no discipline, no heinous crimes, no cutting off of all roots of virtue, no discipline, no attainment of fruition, and no freedom from desire. The life faculty acts independently on the connection of similar kinds and on correct grasping. The mind faculty acts independently on rebirth and the nature of the faculty.

They have dominion over things that accord with their wishes. Among these, the dominion over connecting to existence is as stated: "At that time, if the two minds of the Gandharva subsequently arise, or arise simultaneously, or anger arises simultaneously, whichever manifests." The dominion over things that accord with the nature of dominion is as stated: "This world is led by the mind." What are the five faculties such as pleasure, and what are faith and so forth? These five and eight have dominion over defilement and purification in order. The Vaibhashikas say that the five, such as pleasure, have dominion over defilement, because for them, attachment and so forth will increase. Faith and so forth have dominion over purification, because they purify. Others say that pleasure and so forth also have dominion over purification, for example, a happy mind will become tranquil, and faith, which is the cause of suffering, and the six that rely on the pleasure of the mind and so forth, which are said to be liberation. Others say that in order to completely abandon regression after knowing, it is not true that the eyes and ears protect the body, therefore those two have dominion over cognition. Because those two can separately dominate the uncommon cause, and there is no seeing form or hearing sound other than cognition, therefore they are not such faculties. So what are they like? For one's own objects and all things, because they have dominion over focusing, there are six faculties. The five, such as the eyes, have dominion over focusing on their respective objects. The mind has dominion over focusing on all things, therefore they are separate faculties. Here, do things themselves not dominate? They do not dominate, because especially dominating is dominating. The eye is the common cause for focusing on all forms, and that focus is clear.
