As it is said, "Objects to be made into appearances, pleasing, ugly, etc.," these are not cognized by the eye. The Sutra also says: "Brahmin, the eye is like this, it is the door for seeing objects." Therefore, it should be understood that through the door of the eye, one sees with the consciousness of the eye. There, seeing is merely called a door. It is not permissible to say that the eye is the seer for seeing objects. If consciousness sees, then with what does it cognize? What difference is there between these two? That which cognizes objects does not see this. For example, some wisdom is also called seeing, and is also called complete understanding, similarly, some consciousness is also called seeing, and is also called consciousness. Others say that if the eye sees, then it must be stated what other action of seeing the eye performs as the agent. This should not be refuted, just as it is assumed that consciousness knows, and just as there is no distinction between agent and action there, so too it can be permissible here. Others say that seeing is the consciousness of the eye, and the eye is called seeing because it is its basis, for example, because it is the basis of proclamation, it is called the place of proclamation. If that is the case, then because it is the basis of eye consciousness, should it not also be called consciousness? No, because in the world consciousness is known as seeing, for example, when it arises, people say that they see an object, but they do not say that they are conscious. In the Vibhajyavada it is also said: "That which encounters the eye and is experienced by consciousness is called seeing." Therefore, one should only say that the eye sees, and one should not say that it is consciousness. Consciousness merely exists, therefore it cognizes objects, for example, just as the sun makes the day. The Sutra masters say, what is the need for the one with space? Who is the seer of the eye consciousness that arises in dependence on the eye and objects? What is seeing?

The eye is, this is merely without a doer, merely dharma, merely cause and effect. And, in order to establish the meaning of designation, through the door of aspiration, the eye sees. Consciousness distinguishes with consciousness, therefore one should not be manifestly attached to this. The Blessed One also said: One should not be manifestly attached to the words of the people of the region. One should not manifestly rush to the names of the world. Thus it is said. The eye sees. The ear hears. The nose smells. The tongue tastes. The body touches. The mind distinguishes. This is the tenet of the Kashmir Vaibhashikas. Does one eye see all forms? Or two eyes? There is no certainty about this. Both eyes see, because they see clearly. The Abhidharma masters say: Both eyes also see, thus, if you open both eyes, you will see very clearly. If you open one eye and half open the second, you will perceive two moons, and if either one changes, it is not. There is also no fault of falling into the severance of the support, because consciousness, like form, does not abide in the object. If seeing with the eye and hearing with the ear up to distinguishing with the mind, are these things that touch the object? Or are they things that do not touch? The eye, mind, and ear do not touch the object. Thus, one sees a distant form, but does not see the eye medicine on the eye. Likewise, one hears a distant sound. If it really touched the object, then those in meditative concentration would not develop divine eyes and ears, like the nose and so on. If the eye does not touch the object, then why does it not see everything distant and interrupted that does not touch? Briefly, why does a magnet not attract all iron that does not touch it? If it really touched the object, then why does it not see all the eye medicine or eye stick that does not touch it? That is the same. Just as the nose and so on, although they touch the object, do not grasp the co-arisen smell and so on, so it is not everything, likewise, the eye, although it does not touch, is not everything. The mind is form

Because there is no gap, it cannot touch. Some people think that because sound can also be heard in the ear, the ear can both touch and not touch the object. The remaining nose, tongue, and body are synonyms for "touching the object." How does the nose touch the object? Because one cannot perceive smell without inhaling. What does "touching" mean? It refers to mutual contact. Do atoms (paramāṇu) touch each other or not? The Kashmiris say they do not touch. Why? Because if all selves touch, then matter will mix. If only a part touches, then it will become part-containing, but atoms are partless. How then can sound manifest? Precisely because of this, if there is contact, the hand will sink when it hits the hand, and the stone will sink when it hits the stone. Why doesn't it break when hitting an aggregate? Because it is held by the wind element. Some wind elements participate in destruction, such as at the time of destruction. Some participate in retention, such as at the time of formation. Now, how can these three be called touching the object through contact? Because there is no gap in them, that is the true meaning of contact. Moreover, aggregates are part-containing, so there is no problem with contact. In this way, in the *Vibhajyavāda*, if asked: Is the contact born of contact or the contact born of non-contact? The answer is: Because of causes and conditions, sometimes non-contact is born of the cause of knowledge, that is, at the time of decomposition. Sometimes contact is born of the cause of non-contact, that is, at the time of aggregation. Sometimes contact is born of the cause of contact, that is, when there is aggregation, there is only aggregation. Sometimes non-contact is born of the cause of non-contact, such as dust in sunlight. In this way, the said arising aspect can also be established. Venerable Vasumitra said, atoms...
