Therefore, just like numbers, these two harm the accumulation of samadhi and wisdom. Effort in samadhi is threatened by dullness and sleep, and effort in completely distinguishing the Dharma is threatened by agitation and regret, so they say. Others express it in other ways. How is it expressed? Because it becomes a cause, for the objects of the beautiful and the unbeautiful, in order to grasp the characteristics, the samadhi that abides, the desire and malice that precede it, initially cause obstacles. After that, entering into samadhi, in order to illogically show calm abiding and insight, in order, dullness, sleep, agitation, regret, and doubt, cause obstacles to the virtue of calm abiding and insight. And, when standing up, when appropriately contemplating the Dharma, there is also the obstacle of doubt. Therefore, it is said that there are five obscurations. This needs to be examined. For those who go to all the unequal realms, and those who should be abandoned by seeing cessation and the path, when the object is aimed at with defilements, when the object is completely known, then it will not be abandoned. When it is abandoned, if the object is not completely known, then how will they abandon them? Afflictions are not necessarily exhausted by completely knowing the object. So how is it? In four ways. Which four ways? For a while, those to be abandoned by seeing are: by completely knowing the object, and by the object being truly exhausted, and by abandoning the object. There, by completely knowing the object, those to be abandoned by seeing suffering and arising, those aimed at their own ground, and those to be abandoned by seeing cessation and the path, those aimed at the undefiled, will be exhausted. There, by the true exhaustion of the object, those who go to all the unequal realms will be exhausted, because the object is those who go to all the equal realms, if those are abandoned, then those are also abandoned. By abandoning the object, those to be abandoned by seeing cessation and the path, those aimed at the defiled, will be exhausted, those aimed at the undefiled are those.

Because it is the object of focus, abandoning those also means abandoning those. What is to be abandoned through meditation is exhausted by the arising of the antidote. Whichever aspect of affliction has a path as its antidote, arising that will abandon it. What is whose antidote? The great of the great is called the small of the small, which will be explained in detail below. Are there also many kinds of antidotes? It is said: There are four kinds of antidotes: abandonment, basis, and nature itself, refutation, called abandonment antidote is the uninterrupted path. The basis antidote is whatever path is before that, by which one completely holds the abandonment obtained by it. The antidote of the nature of severing continuity is whatever path is before the path of liberation, because of obtaining the severance of continuity. Others say that the path of liberation is also, because it also makes that which is obtained continue. The antidote of refutation is whatever path sees the fault in that realm and refutes it. Furthermore, the order of these is that the antidote of refutation is the path that combines focusing on suffering and origin. The abandonment antidote is all the uninterrupted paths. The basis antidote is the path of liberation. The antidote of the nature of severing continuity is the special path, which will become very good. When abandoning afflictions, from where should they be abandoned? One wants to abandon afflictions from the object of focus. From the corresponding, one cannot distinguish afflictions. From the object of focus, one can, like this, focusing on it will not arise. For the time being, the future can be distinguished from the object of focus, then how can the past be? However, the meaning of this is that by completely knowing the object of focus, this is what is to be abandoned, if one says this, it is also uncertain, therefore this must be said. How much is it said that afflictions have been abandoned? It is said that what exists in one's own continuum is through the cessation of attainment. What exists in the continuum of others is affliction and all formless things, and non-afflictive dharmas, is abandoning the afflictions that focus on those and exist in one's own continuum.
