It is said that when explaining the sequence of (the four dhyanas), (the practitioner) is not devoured by demons, but universally abides in equanimity (neutral feeling). Then, what are the (mental factors) of the higher realms (form and formless realms)? The (mental factors) of the higher realms, like the earth, exist individually. The subtle differences of the higher realms are that no matter how many faculties there are in any realm, they correspond to their respective faculties. There, the aggregates of consciousness that exist in various ways correspond to the four aggregates of consciousness, and the ground of mind corresponds only to the ground of mind. The afflictions corresponding to the faculties have been explained. Regarding the near afflictions, the words "corresponding to regret, jealousy, anger, malice, resentment, concealment, and displeasure" should be added. These are because they enter into a state of sorrow and are the ground of mind, and are also the antidote to stinginess. This is the meaning of corresponding to pleasantness. Arising from the cause of desire, it is because it enters into a state of joy. Flattery, deceit, pride, concealment, and sleep, these five all correspond to pleasantness and unpleasantness. Sometimes pleasantness lures others, and sometimes it is unpleasantness. Sleep is also similar to this. Happiness, etc., pride, in the third dhyana correspond to happiness. Below the third dhyana, they correspond to pleasantness. Above the third dhyana, they correspond to equanimity. Thus, equanimity is universally present. Everything corresponds to equanimity, just like ignorance, there is no obstruction to anything. The other four correspond to the five: shamelessness, lack of embarrassment, torpor, agitation, and pervasive grasping, these four correspond to all five faculties, because they are the ground of unwholesomeness and also the ground of affliction. The sutra says: "Desire for desire, malice, torpor, sleep, agitation, regret, doubt," what are these five obscurations referring to? Are they referring to the torpor, agitation, and doubt of the three realms (desire realm, form realm, formless realm)? Or are they only referring to the (afflictions) that correspond to desire? The sutra says: "This is unwholesome"

It is completely unmixed and perfect. For example, because it is said that the "five hindrances" are all that is unwholesome, if it is thought that there are hindrances, if they exist, they do not exist in other realms. Why are dullness and sleep also said to be one hindrance, and agitation and regret also said to be one? Because they are dissimilar, and their food and activity are the same. Two are one. Making two into one is two into one. Dissimilar things, antidotes, and non-food are the same in meaning. The sutra says that the food of dullness and sleep is also the same, and non-food is also the same. What is the food of the hindrance of dullness and sleep? It is five things: foolishness, displeasure, occupational foolishness, insufficient warmth of food, and discouragement. What is the non-food of the hindrance of dullness and sleep? It is the perception of light. The activity of these two is also the same, and these two cause discouragement. The food of agitation and regret is also the same, and non-food is also the same. What is the food of agitation and regret? It is four things: conceptualization of relatives, conceptualization of objects, conceptualization of immortality, and remembering past laughter, play, joy, and enjoyment. What is the non-food of the hindrance of agitation and regret? It is calm abiding. The activity of these two is also the same, and these two cause the mind to be unpacified. Therefore, because they are dissimilar, and their food and activity are the same, it is said that two are one. If all afflictions are hindrances, why are only five mentioned? Because they harm the aggregates and cause doubt, there are only five. Desire and hatred harm the aggregate of ethics. Dullness and sleep harm the aggregate of wisdom. Agitation and regret harm the aggregate of concentration. If there is no concentration and wisdom, there will be doubt about the truth, therefore five are mentioned. Others say that for this kind of conceptualization, the hindrance of agitation and regret, which is contrary to the aggregate of concentration, has already been mentioned.
