What are the bonds? There are three bonds: the bond is all desire, the bond is hatred, and all ignorance. Why are these three called bonds? Because the power of feeling leads to three bonds. The power of the three feelings leads to three bonds: for the feeling of pleasure, desire grows in a way that is similar to the object; for suffering, it is hatred; for the feeling of neither pleasure nor pain, it is ignorance. Desire and hatred are not like that. Or, it is determined by the recognition of the object that exists in one's own continuum. The subtle increases have already been explained. Now the near afflictions are to be spoken of. Among them, those that are afflictions are also near afflictions, because they make the mind close to affliction. Other than afflictions, those with afflictions, mental formations are called near afflictions. But they are not called afflictions. Other than afflictions, those dharmas that have afflictions, that arise from the mind, and are included in the aggregate of formations, are only near afflictions, not afflictions. These also arise from small bases. Here, only what is completely entangled and contained by the defilement of afflictions should be shown. What is complete entanglement? The answer is that affliction is also complete entanglement, because the sutra says: the complete entanglement of desire for desire is the root of suffering. In the treatises it says: shamelessness and lack of shame, jealousy and stinginess, excitement and regret, and lethargy and sleep, these eight are complete entanglements. According to the view of the Vaibhashikas, there are ten complete entanglements, namely the above eight, plus anger and concealment. Among them, shamelessness and lack of shame have already been explained. Jealousy is when the mind feels uneasy about the perfection of others. Stinginess is when the mind is completely attached to things that are contrary to the giving of dharma, wealth, and wise people. Excitement is when the mind is not peaceful. Regret and lethargy have already been explained. Sleep is when the body is unable to maintain itself properly.

It is the gathering of the manifestation of mind. That and regret are afflictive pervasive entanglements. Anger is the mind that pervasively torments sentient and non-sentient beings, excluding the intention to harm and harm itself. Concealment is hiding faults. Among those pervasive entanglements, desire, shamelessness, agitation, and stinginess arise. These three near afflictions are the co-emergent cause of desire. Concealment is disputed. Some say: it is the co-emergent cause of craving. Others say: it is the co-emergent cause of ignorance. Others say: it is both of these, in order, the co-emergent cause of those who know and do not know. From ignorance arise: dullness, sleep, and shamelessness. These three are the co-emergent cause of ignorance. From doubt arise regret and anger, and jealousy arises from the cause of hatred. They are pervasively aroused by hatred. Thus, these ten near afflictions are the co-emergent cause of afflictions. Furthermore, there are six afflictive stains. Namely: deceit and cunning and pride, likewise resentment and grudge and harm. Among them, deceit is deceiving others. Cunning is the falsity of mind, whereby one does not reveal the truth as it is, or exaggerates speech or makes it unclear. Pride has been previously explained. Resentment is grasping onto things with faults, whereby one does not grasp wise words. Grudge is repeatedly thinking about things that cause harm. Harm is harming, whereby one harms others with weapons and harsh words. Among these six afflictive stains, deceit and pride arise from desire, grudge and harm arise from hatred. Resentment arises from clinging to views. Cunning is pervasively aroused by views. What is falsity? It is sinful views. As it appears in the verses, therefore it is reasonable that cunning is the co-emergent cause of views. By what should these be abandoned? For the moment, what are the ten pervasive entanglements that have been spoken of? Among them, shamelessness and lack of shame, dullness, sleep, agitation,
