Holding precepts as supreme. Grasping at extremes leads to holding precepts and asceticism as supreme, because only those who grasp at this alone believe in purity. Then, combined with "regarded as supreme," from holding precepts and asceticism as supreme, it turns to holding views as supreme, because one believes in purity from this, so it is regarded as supreme. Then: Arrogance arises towards one's own view. Because of attachment to this, and because of being filled with it. Hatred arises towards others. For those who are particularly attached to their own views, hatred arises towards the views of others who become their enemies. Some others think that abandoning one's own view and taking another's view will cause hatred towards others. The objects of the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing, such as desire, are because they are the views that exist in one's own continuum. Thus, in order. This is the order of arising of those ten latent predispositions. Arising arises from three causes: latent predispositions not abandoned, the object is nearby, and inappropriate attention, afflictions arise. For example, the latent predisposition of desire-attachment is not abandoned and not fully understood. The pervasive entanglement of desire-attachment, and the corresponding dharmas also appear. And also, inappropriate attention is given to this, and thus desire-attachment arises. These are successively the powers of cause, object, and application. Other afflictions should also be understood to arise in the same way. Some are where the cause is pure, and sometimes it is only the power of the object, and not the power of the cause of arising. For example, it is said that the dharma of an Arhat who has completely fallen away is like that. Furthermore, these latent predispositions, the Bhagavan also said are the three outflows: the outflow of desire, the outflow of existence, and the outflow of ignorance. The four floods: the flood of desire, the flood of existence, the flood of views, and the flood of ignorance. The four bonds: these are the same. The four clingings: clinging to desire, clinging to views, clinging to ethics and asceticism, and clinging to the doctrine of self. Among these, first of all, desire, if not ignorance

of. Afflictions are all bound, with outflows. Apart from ignorance, the afflictions that operate in the desire realm, along with their bonds and outflows, the forty-one things should be known as the outflows of desire. Apart from the five types of ignorance, the thirty-one subtle latent afflictions and the ten bonds. In the realm of form and the formless realm, only the subtle ones have outflows. The phrase "apart from ignorance" should be added. Apart from ignorance, the fifty-two subtle things that operate in the realm of form and the formless realm are the outflows of existence. Apart from the five types of ignorance, the twenty-six subtle latent afflictions that operate in the realm of form, and the twenty-six that operate in the formless realm. Then, aren't there also agitation and drowsiness and the two bonds there? In the Vibhajyavāda it is also said: "What are the outflows of existence? Apart from ignorance, what are the remaining pervasive actions, bonds, subtle latent afflictions, near afflictions, and bonds that are associated with the realm of form and the formless realm?" Why are these not mentioned here? The Kashmiris say that it is because they are not autonomous. Why are the subtle latent afflictions that operate in the realm of form and the formless realm gathered together and called the outflows of existence? Because they are unindicated, inwardly gazing, and are those who abide in equanimity, they are made one. Because both of them are unindicated, and they enter into samadhi by gazing inward, and they are the grounds of equanimity, they are gathered together by three common dharmas. By what cause is it said to be attachment to existence, that itself is called the outflows of existence. Now, the fifteen things of the three realms of ignorance are established as the outflows of ignorance. Why is this established separately? Because the root of all of them is ignorance, the outflows are shown separately. Just as those outflows have been explained, the rivers and bonds should also be understood in the same way. For the sake of clarifying the gods, they are shown separately. Apart from views, only the outflows of desire are the rivers of desire and the bonds of desire. Similarly, only the outflows of existence are the rivers of existence and the bonds of existence. Those are for dispelling water.
