These should be known. For example, the Blessed One said in the sutra on the ultimate truth of emptiness: "The eye, when it arises, does not come from anywhere; and when it ceases, it does not go anywhere." Therefore, monks, the eye arises from not having arisen, and having arisen, it will again perish. If a future eye existed, it would not be said to arise from not having arisen. If it is said that in the present time it arises from not having arisen, that is not possible, because time is not something different from things. However, if it is said to arise from not having arisen in its own nature, then it is established that there is no future eye. If someone says that consciousness arises dependent on two things, then for the moment, here, the consciousness of mind arises dependent on mind and dharmas. Are dharmas the same as the cause of the arising of mind? Or are dharmas merely objects? This question needs to be examined. For the moment, if it is said that dharmas are the cause of arising, then how can that which will arise in a thousand kalpas in the future, or that which will not arise, cause the present consciousness to arise? Nirvana is also contrary to all involvements, so it should not be the cause of arising. However, if it is said that dharmas are merely objects, then the past and the not-past are also objects. If it is asked how something that does not exist can be an object, then here it is said that it exists in the way that it is an object. If it is asked how it is an object, it is that which has happened and that which will happen. No one thinks that past form or feeling exists in memory. So what is it? It is thought that it has happened. And just as one experiences form now, one also remembers the past. How the future becomes the present is known by the Buddhas. If it is said that it still exists in that way, then it will become the present. If it is said that it does not exist, then it is established that non-existence is also an object. If it is said that it itself is scattered

It is not, because it does not cling to the minute. If it is also said that it is only form, merely divided into extremely minute particles, then in that case, the extremely minute particles will become permanent. If so, the extremely minute particles will only be assembled and separated, without any birth or cessation, which raises the argument of sustenance. The sutra that extensively states that the eye does not come from anywhere when it is born will also be abandoned. How can feelings and so on, which are not aggregates of extremely minute particles, be minute? How do they arise and remember what they have experienced? If it is said that they exist as they are, then they will become permanent. If it is said that they do not exist, then it is established that non-existence is also an object. If non-existence is also an object, then the thirteenth source will also become an object. Then, what is the object of this consciousness that thinks that the thirteenth source does not exist? The name itself is the object. If so, then it will be understood that the name itself does not exist. What is the object of that which is aimed at what does not exist before sound? It is only sound. If so, then for those who seek the meaning of silence, it will necessarily become necessary to make a sound. If it is said that it is the future state, then if it exists, how can it become a thought of non-existence? If it is said that it does not exist now, then it is not, because it is one. Or, whatever its difference is, it will be established as arising from what has never happened. Therefore, the object of consciousness is both existence and non-existence. Then, what about what the Bodhisattvas know or see of what does not exist in the world, saying that it has nowhere to go? The thought here is that those with pride think that others appear to be non-existent, while the self exists only in existence. It is not so. If the object of all minds is only existence, then how can this become discrimination? Or what difference is there? It should undoubtedly be known to be so. Just as the Blessed One said elsewhere, 'Come, my Shravaka monks.'
