Likewise. Because there is a place. If there is a place, the arising of consciousness will not be without. If the past and future do not exist, it will become an aspect without an object. Therefore, because there is no object, it will not become consciousness itself. Because of the result. If the past does not exist, what will the result of good and bad deeds in the next life become? When the result is produced, there is no cause for the present ripening. Therefore, the Vaibhashikas say that the past and future certainly exist. Whoever is a Sarvastivadin must undoubtedly acknowledge this, which is famous. Like this: Because it says it exists, everything, wants to say exists. Those who say that everything that happened in the past, future, and present exists are the Sarvastivadins. Those who say that the present and the past deeds that have not produced results, a little of which exists; the future and the past that have already produced results, a little of which does not exist, those who speak separately are the separate speakers. So, what are those Sarvastivadins? The answer is: Those, there are four kinds, namely things, nature, state, each transforms. The one who transforms things is the Venerable Dharmatrata. He said that when the Dharma enters into various times, things will transform, but the substance does not transform. For example, when a gold vessel is destroyed and made into something else, the shape will transform, but the color will not transform. Also, for example, when milk turns into yogurt, the taste, power, and ripening effect will completely disappear, but the color will not disappear. Similarly, when the Dharma comes from the future to the present, it will abandon the future things, but will not abandon the real things of the substance. Similarly, when going from the present to the past, it will abandon the present things, but will not abandon the real things of the substance, he said. The one who transforms nature is the Venerable Ghosaka. He said that when the Dharma enters into various times, in the past, it has the nature of the past, while the future and present

Themselves do not lack those (past, present, future) characteristics. The future possesses the characteristics of the future, but the past and present do not lack these characteristics. Similarly, the present also does not lack the past and future. For example, a man is attached to some women, but not detached from desire for the remaining ones, it is said. It is said that they say so. The one who transforms into another state is the Venerable Vasumitra. He says that when Dharma enters into times, it goes from state to state and shows otherness through other states, but not through other substances. For example, if a single counter is placed in the ones place, it is called one; if placed in the hundreds place, it is called a hundred; if placed in the thousands place, it is called a thousand. It is said that they say so. The one who transforms into other and other is the Venerable Buddadeva. He says that when Dharma enters into times, it is called other and other in relation to the former and the latter. For example, the same woman is called mother and daughter. It is said that they say so. Thus, these four are all proponents of Sarvastivada. Among them, the first one, because it asserts complete transformation, should be refuted by the Samkhya school. The second one, because everything possesses all characteristics, will lead to confusion of time. For example, what is similar here to a man who has desire for some women, but only possesses it for others? The fourth one will transform one time into all three times. For the past time, the former and latter moments are past and future, and the middle moment becomes present. Therefore, among all of these, the third one is the best, which is the one that transforms into another state. By action, time is distinguished. When that Dharma does not do something, then it is the future; when it does something, then it is the present; when it has done and ceased, then it is the past. It is said that they say so. If all of these are fully understood, if the past also exists as a substance and the future also exists as a substance, then why is it necessary to say past or future? By action, time.
