It should be said that there is. If it is said, 'Please speak of form,' it should be said that form also has three types: virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral. If it is said, 'Please speak of virtue,' it should be said that there are seven types, from abstaining from killing to abstaining from frivolous talk. If it is said, 'Please speak of abstaining from killing,' it also has three types: born from non-attachment, non-hatred, and non-ignorance. And that which is born from non-attachment also has two types by the distinction of revealing and non-revealing. It should be explained by distinguishing in such a way. Answering the question of a deceitful person is also the same. One should say that there are many dharmas, but one should not make distinctions. Either say nothing, or say, 'This is the final ultimatum to let yourself make a prophecy.' When are these two not even slightly different?

This is the question that should be prophesied. Monks, what is the question that should be prophesied after being asked? Is consciousness the self of the person (Sanskrit: Pudgala, person)? Or is consciousness something else, and am I something else? If asked in this way, one should ask what the long-lived one believes himself to be. If he says, "Long-lived one, I know that consciousness is me," then it should be said, "Consciousness is also something else, and I am also something else." This, monks, is the question that should be prophesied after being asked. Monks, what is the question that should be set aside? For example, is the world permanent? Or is it impermanent? Is it both permanent and impermanent? Is it neither permanent nor impermanent? Is it finite? Is it infinite? Is it both finite and infinite? Is it neither finite nor infinite? Similarly, does the Tathagata exist after death? Up to the question of whether life is something else and the body is something else? Questions like these, this is the question that should be set aside, monks. Whatever subtle increase of any person increases in any object, that person is in accordance with that object. With what is the past in accordance? Up to what is the present in accordance? This should be said. In short, there are two kinds of afflictions: self-nature afflictions are desire, anger, and pride. Universal afflictions are views, doubt, and ignorance. Among them, past and present desire, anger, and pride, for whom they arise and are not abandoned, then that thing is in accordance with the present. Because they are self-nature afflictions, they do not necessarily occur universally in all things. Oneself, those future, all, for whom those not abandoned, should be connected in this way. The desire, anger, and pride of the mind-ground, those future

English

The mind possesses all things of the three times, because the object of the mind is the three times. Others possess their own time. Other desires and angers possess only future things. What else is there? It is the desire and anger of the five aggregates of consciousness, which is the case for those who have the nature of birth. Those who are unborn possess everything. Those who do not have the nature of birth, the five aggregates of consciousness also possess all things of the three times. The rest possess everything. What else is there? It is views, doubts, and ignorance, etc., because they possess general afflictions, so they possess all things that do not have the three times. This is only from the perspective of not having abandoned them. Do past and future things exist as substances? Or do they not exist? If they exist, then because they exist in all times, conditioned things would become permanent. If they do not exist, then how can one say that they are related to it? Or that they possess or do not possess it? The Vaibhashikas believe that because they possess the characteristics of conditioned things, they will not assert that conditioned things are permanent. But they will clearly assert that they exist in all times. Why? Because the Buddha said, "Monks, if a past form did not exist, then a noble hearer who possesses hearing would not fail to observe the past form. Because the past form exists, the noble hearer who possesses hearing does not observe the past form. If a future form did not exist, then a noble hearer who possesses hearing would not fail to have manifest joy in the future form. Because the future form exists," and so on in detail. Secondly, consciousness arises in dependence on two things. What are these two? From the eye and forms, etc., up to the mind and dharmas. If the past and future did not exist, then the consciousness that arises in dependence on them would not arise in dependence on two things. For the time being, from the scriptures, the existence of the past and future is like this. From reasoning,
