Just like the word "etc.," here it is said that the word "etc." is not explicitly expressed. Thus, it should be recognized that these are the five views. If one considers discipline and asceticism as the cause, rather than viewing it from the perspective of the cause, then why is it not abandoned by what is seen by the origin of suffering? Because some people consider Ishvara or the Lord of Beings as the cause, they cling to the notion that it is permanent, singular, self, and the agent. Therefore, it is like this: clinging to Ishvara etc. as the cause, that is the inverted view of permanence and self. Because of complete involvement, therefore, that is what should be abandoned by seeing suffering. For those who cling to permanence and self, only by seeing suffering can they be abandoned. Therefore, clinging to what is created by it as the cause will also be abandoned in the same way. Then, what about being born in heaven by entering fire and water, etc., or considering discipline and asceticism as purifying? That too should be abandoned by seeing suffering. The scriptures say this: Some people, whether male or female, correctly uphold the discipline of the cow, the discipline of the dog, and the discipline of the crow, etc., and abide in them, they will become pure, attain liberation, will surely be liberated, transcend suffering and happiness, and will also attain the state of transcending suffering and happiness. To view and speak in this way is because of clinging to non-cause as the cause, and extolling discipline and asceticism, which is precisely what should be abandoned by seeing suffering. There is a detailed explanation of this. Why should it be abandoned by seeing suffering? Because it is wrongly engaging in suffering. All things that are aimed at defiled objects are wrongly engaging in suffering, therefore it will become very excessive. Or, for extolling discipline and asceticism, what else should be abandoned by seeing the truth? It is aiming at what should be abandoned by seeing the path. That too is wrongly engaging in suffering. Furthermore, for those who have wrong views or doubts about the path, or who think that there is no path to liberation, or who have doubts, how can they be sure that the scriptures are correct?

However, if someone considers other paths to liberation as superior and says, "This is liberation, there is no other path," then, merely believing that other paths are pure is an incorrect view, because it cannot target what should be abandoned through the path of seeing. Furthermore, if someone, upon seeing the origin and cessation, develops a wrong view towards what should be abandoned, thereby believing it to be correct, then why are those (origin and cessation) not what should be abandoned through the path of seeing? Therefore, this principle should be constantly adhered to. "I perceive permanence, pleasure, purity, and self with inverted views." As it is said, are there only these two inversions? There are four inversions: perceiving permanence in impermanence, pleasure in suffering, purity in impurity, and self in non-self. So, what is the nature of these four inversions? Four inversions arise from three views. From the view of clinging to extremes arises the inversion of permanence. From clinging to views arises the inversion of pleasure and purity. From the view of the aggregates of destruction arises the inversion of self. Some say that everything is inverted. Then, why is the view of "mine" not an inversion? Why is it not an inversion? Because it does not appear in the sutras on inversions. From that, it is said that merely clinging to "I" as the master will become the view of "mine." Therefore, the view of "self" itself has two meanings. However, if "I" and "mine" are different views, then "for me" and "because of me" would also become like that. Why are other afflictions not inversions? Because there are three reasons to distinguish inversions: because of inversion, because of certainty, and because of superimposition. Because the object is a single inversion, because of certainty, and because of superimposition. The views of annihilation and wrong views are not the cause of entering the gate of non-existence, nor are they superimposition. Clinging to discipline and asceticism, merely because of those, thinking that one can be purified, is not a single inversion. Other afflictions are not certain, so.
