There are ten things to be abandoned by seeing suffering. For those themselves, there are seven things to be abandoned by seeing the origin and cessation, and seven things to be abandoned by seeing cessation, namely: the view of the aggregates, the view of extremes, and except for the adherence to ethics and asceticism. There are eight things to be abandoned by seeing the path, namely: except for the view of the aggregates and the view of extremes. Thus, there are thirty-two subtle differences. These are to be abandoned by seeing, because they are abandoned merely by seeing the truths. Four are to be abandoned by meditation. For example: desire, anger, ignorance, and pride. Because after seeing the truth, they are abandoned by repeatedly practicing the path. Thus, the view of the aggregates is one kind, which is to be abandoned by seeing suffering. The view of extremes is also the same as this. Wrong views are of four kinds, namely: to be abandoned by seeing suffering, origin, cessation, and path. The view of holding views as supreme and doubt are also the same as this. Adherence to ethics and asceticism are of two kinds, namely: to be abandoned by seeing suffering and the path. Desire, anger, pride, and ignorance are of five kinds, namely: to be abandoned by seeing the four truths, and to be abandoned by meditation. What are those to be abandoned by seeing suffering? What is it like between those to be abandoned by meditation? Those that have an object to be abandoned by seeing are to be abandoned by seeing, and the rest are to be abandoned by meditation. Among these, there are twelve kinds of views. There are four kinds of doubt. There are five kinds of desire. There are five kinds of anger. There are five kinds of pride. There are five kinds of ignorance, so there are thirty-six subtle differences that exist in the desire realm. Those belonging to anger themselves. Form realm. Except for the five kinds of anger, the thirty-one subtle differences that exist in the form realm are those themselves. How it is in the form realm, so it is the same in the formless realm. Thirty-one subtle differences. Thus, there are a total of ninety-eight.

Therefore, in the Abhidharma, it is held that these six subtle afflictions, distinguished by type, difference, and realm, amount to ninety-eight in total. So, are those subtle afflictions described as being abandoned by the path of seeing necessarily abandoned only through the path of seeing? The answer is no. Then, what is it like? "By the forbearance born from the peak of existence, what is to be destroyed is precisely what is abandoned by seeing." Those subtle afflictions that arise from the ground of the peak of existence, which are to be destroyed by the forbearance of subsequent knowledge, are precisely what are abandoned by seeing, and not those that are abandoned by cultivation. "Connect 'remaining grounds, seeing and cultivation both, forbearance destroys'." On the remaining grounds, there are subtle afflictions to be abandoned by the Dharma and the forbearance of subsequent knowledge. These afflictions, as appropriate, are abandoned by the noble ones through seeing, while ordinary beings abandon them through cultivation. "What is not destroyed by forbearance is abandoned only by cultivation." On all grounds, those subtle afflictions that are to be destroyed by knowledge are always abandoned by cultivation for both. Others say that what is abandoned by the non-Buddhists is only what is abandoned by seeing. For example, in the Great Sutra on the Differentiation of Actions and the Differentiation of the Beginning, from the perspective of abandoning conceptual thoughts, those who assert permanence, and some who assert permanence, and those who assert that all things arise without cause, and those who are free from desire, it is said that views arising from the desire realm, the afflictions that operate in the form realm do not target the desire realm, because they are free from desire. Therefore, only those who possess desire have not abandoned these afflictions. The Vaibhashikas say that these views also completely disappear at the same time as they arise, like Devadatta. The five views are only explained from the perspective of names, and not from the perspective of their own essence. So, what is the essence of these views? "The view of self and what belongs to self, permanence and cessation, seeing fire and medicine as supreme, seeing what is not a cause or a path as such, these are the five views." The view that there is a self or something belonging to self is the view of the aggregates of destruction. Because it is destroyed, it is destruction; because it is accumulated, it is an aggregate; many

“Po” and “Phungpo” are synonyms. This is both “Jigpa (destruction)” and “Tshog (collection),” so it is “Jigtshog (corruptible aggregate),” which is the “Nyevar lenpai phungpo nga (five aggregates of grasping).” In order to abandon the perception of permanence and the perception of wholeness, it is said so. Grasping at them is preceded by them. Because of observing the corruptible aggregate, it is the view of the corruptible aggregate. All objects that are connected with defilements are views of the corruptible aggregate, but in any case, this is the view of the corruptible aggregate, but not self or self's. In order to understand this, only the view of self and self's are explained as the view of the corruptible aggregate. As it is said in the sutra: "Monks, any Shramana or Brahmin, if they correctly contemplate 'there is a self,' then all those correct contemplations are only contemplating these five aggregates of grasping." To regard as permanent or to regard as annihilation the very thing that appears as self is the view of holding to extremes, because it holds to the extremes of permanence and annihilation. To say that suffering and other truths exist or do not exist is a wrong view. All views that enter the wrong path are wrong views, but just as essence is extracted from ghee, because it has a very powerful force, only one is spoken of, that is, this is slander, while the others are exaggerations. To regard the inferior as superior is the view of holding to views. What is inferior? It is all contaminated dharmas, because they are abandoned by the noble ones. To hold to that as supreme is the view of holding to views, that is, the word "etc." is not explicitly stated, such as "holding views etc. as supreme." To regard what is not a cause as a cause, and to regard what is not a path as a path is the holding to precepts and vows, for example, if the Great Ishvara or the Lord of Beings etc. are not the cause of the world, but they are regarded as the cause; if entering fire and water etc. are not the cause of higher realms, but they are regarded as the cause; merely precepts and asceticism, and the knowledge of Samkhya and Yoga etc. are not the path to liberation, but they are regarded as the path.
