Because it contradicts virtue. Because of what (reason) subtle augmentations (ཕྲ་རྒྱས་,anusaya) cause the mind to become afflicted, and unprecedented virtues do not arise, and even those that have arisen completely degenerate, therefore they are not corresponding. However, if those that are not corresponding (subtle augmentations) also transform in this way, then because they are constantly nearby, virtue would never be perceived. If it is perceived, then because virtue is also perceived, here, subtle augmentations are not non-corresponding. This is not a valid reason. Thus, if someone believes that subtle augmentations are not corresponding, then they do not believe that all of this is done by subtle augmentations, but only that it is done by afflictions. The view of the Sutra School is good. What is the view of the Sutra School? The subtle augmentation of desire is the subtle augmentation of desire, and because that is not another thing, the subtle augmentation is neither similar and corresponding, nor non-corresponding, but rather, latent afflictions are called subtle augmentations, and awakening is called pervasive entanglement. Among them, what is latency? It is not manifest, but is connected with the entity of the seed. What is awakening? It is manifestation. What is meant by the entity of the seed? It is the power that arises from the afflictions of the body and produces afflictions, for example, the power that arises from the experienced knowledge and produces memory, and also like the power that sprouts and so on from the fruit of rice. If someone, for the sake of the seed of afflictions, clings to the non-corresponding subtle augmentation as another thing, then the seed of memory will also be regarded as another thing. Then, where does the Sutra say that affliction itself is a subtle augmentation? In the sixth group of the six groups, it says: This (being)'s desire increases on pleasant feeling. If it is said that (the Sutra) says increase, because (the Sutra) says increase, that itself is not a subtle augmentation. Then when does it increase? It increases when it is latent. Or it should be considered that this is a close designation made from the cause. Incidentally, putting aside the future, we should enter the treatise. The Sutra says desire and existence.

What is meant by "craving for existence"? Which desire is stronger? What is this called "craving for existence"? It is the craving for existence that arises from the two realms. The craving that arises from the form and formless realms is called craving for existence. Why is it said that way? Because the mouth looks inward. It is said to reverse the notion of liberation. Those are mostly people who have a craving for absorption in meditation. That is also because the mouth looks inward. Therefore, in order to reverse the notion that some people think they are liberated from those two realms, it is said to be craving for existence. It is said that only the body exists, and those beings also experience the support and taste of absorption, because they are free from desire, only the body experiences the taste. Therefore, that desire is called craving for existence. Furthermore, in the Abhidharma, the six latent tendencies are also explained as ten. How is it done? Five views, namely, the view of the aggregates of destruction, wrong view, extreme view, view of holding views as supreme, and the view of holding moral discipline and asceticism as supreme, making ten. If the view is divided into five types from the six latent tendencies, it becomes ten. The five natures of views are the view of the aggregates of destruction, wrong view, extreme view, the view of holding views as supreme, and the view of holding moral discipline and asceticism as supreme. The five natures that are not views are desire, anger, pride, ignorance, and doubt. Furthermore, in the Abhidharma, from those ten latent tendencies, there are thirty-six modes of conduct in the desire realm, thirty-one modes of conduct in the form realm, and thirty-one modes of conduct in the formless realm, which are also explained as ninety-eight in total. How is it done? These latent tendencies, in short, are what should be abandoned by the path of seeing and what should be abandoned by the path of cultivation in the three realms. Among them, in the desire realm, there are thirty-two modes of conduct to be abandoned by the path of seeing. What are those? Those are ten, seven, seven, eight. Except for three views and two views, in the desire realm, suffering and so on are gradually abandoned through the path of seeing. It is said that the ten latent tendencies that are mentioned are in the desire realm.
