If it is not completed to that extent, even if that action is done, it is not accumulation. If it is completed, then it is accumulation. If there is no regret and no antidote, what is it like? It is that there is no remorse for that action, and there is no antidote. What is the retinue? For non-virtuous actions, the retinue is also not non-virtuous. What is the Vipāka? It is certain to produce Vipāka. Similarly, this should also be applied to virtuous actions. Actions done other than that are not accumulated. It is said that giving alms to a stupa with attachment is for one's own benefit. If one cannot enjoy it, how can it become merit? Merit is of two kinds: one is that which arises from the cause of giving, which is that which arises solely from giving; the other is that which arises from complete enjoyment, which is that which arises from the complete enjoyment of the Dharma to be given. For a stupa, the merit arising from the cause of giving does not arise from the cause of complete enjoyment. If there is no receiver, how can it be merit? If there is a receiver, it will become merit, and if there is not, it will not be merit. What is the reason for this? Because no benefit has been conferred on anyone. This is not the reason, for if merely conferring benefit could become merit, then immeasurable love and so on, and the cultivation of correct views, would not become merit. Therefore, it should also be considered that giving to a stupa is merit. Like love and so on without a receiver. Just as love and so on have no receiver and do not confer benefit on others, but become merit through the power of one's own mind, so too, even if the one with qualities has passed away, having faith in him will generate merit from one's own mind. Then, would not the objects of giving and offering become meaningless? No, because the faith that motivates that action is the most excellent. For example, if a person with secret enmity, with the actions of body and speech motivated by that, acts with the thought of an enemy as if he were dead, then a great deal of non-merit will arise, but not merely from the thought. Similarly, even though the teacher has passed away, but to him

If acts of generosity and offering are initiated with faith, immense merit will arise, not just from faith alone. If the seed to be given is a good field, then the fruit will be satisfactory. If given to barren land, will the fruit be satisfactory? Because cause and effect are not mistaken. Even in barren land, there will be satisfactory fruit. Even in barren land, it is seen that the seed does not produce a mistaken fruit. For example, the seed of a grape only produces sweet grape fruit, and the seed of a neem tree only produces bitter neem fruit. Similarly, even in barren land, the fruit of the seed of generosity sown with the extraordinary intention of benefiting others will only produce satisfactory results, not unsatisfactory ones. The defect of the land will only make the fruit of that seed small or without fruit. The merit arising from generosity, together with the additional conditions that serve as the basis for action, is thus completely concluded. Next to be discussed is that which arises from discipline. It says: Corrupt discipline is the form of non-virtue; abandoning it is discipline. The form of non-virtue is called corrupt discipline. Abandoning it is discipline. Abandoning is also of two kinds: abandoning by means of manifestation, and abandoning by means of non-manifestation. Discipline is not merely abandoning corrupt discipline. What then is it like? That which is forbidden by the Buddha. Even if it is not corrupt discipline by nature, whatever is forbidden by the Buddha, the Bhagavan, such as untimely food, etc., abandoning these two is also discipline. Because having taken vows, if one practices these, it will become corrupt discipline. Discipline has been briefly explained. Pure and endowed with four qualities. That discipline which is endowed with four qualities is pure. The opposite is impure. How is it endowed with four qualities? That discipline is not drawn by causes; its antidote relies on tranquility. For the time being, it is not drawn by corrupt discipline, as has been said before. Not being drawn by the cause of corrupt discipline means

It is because afflictions such as attachment and near afflictions have not been drawn. Relying on the antidote to immoral discipline is because it relies on mindfulness. Relying on peace is because it does not rely on the distinction of birth, but is completely dedicated to Nirvana. Others say that there are five reasons: the path of action is truly pure, the near attainment is pure, the discriminations are not drawn, the mindfulness is completely grasped, and it is completely dedicated to Nirvana. Others say that there are four types of discipline: the discipline of fear is the one that is protected from the fear of no livelihood, no restraint, punishment, and falling into evil destinies. The discipline of wishing for goodness is the one that is protected from attachment to existence, enjoyment, and respect. The discipline that is in accordance with the limbs of enlightenment is the one that is protected by those with right view for the sake of liberation. The completely pure discipline is the one that is without outflows because it is without defilement. The discipline is complete. The virtue of equipoise is meditation. What is equipoise? It is the nature of samadhi and whatever arises simultaneously with it. Why is this called meditation? Because it tames the mind. The virtue of non-equipoise is because it makes it its own nature with continuous qualities, so it tames the mind extremely, just like sesame seeds are perfumed with flowers. If someone says that giving temporarily becomes great wealth, then what do discipline and meditation become? For the sake of heaven, keep discipline, for the sake of liberation, meditation is the main thing. Giving can also be transformed for the sake of heaven, but discipline is the main thing. Discipline cannot become liberation, but meditation is the main thing. The sutra says that four kinds of people can generate the merit of Brahma, what is the merit of Brahma? The Vaibhashikas say that it is knowing the measure of the karma that has the complete marks.
