If asked, are these the basis for performing meritorious deeds? These three are both the performance of meritorious deeds and their basis, like the path of karma. These three, according to circumstances, are both merit, action, and basis, so they are the basis for performing meritorious deeds. For example, they are both karma and the path of karma, and only the path of karma, so they are called the path of karma. Among them, regarding the basis for performing meritorious deeds arising from generosity, the actions of body and speech include all three forms. The intention that initiates these is both merit and action. The dharmas that arise together with it are only merit. What arises from discipline is only the action of body and speech, so it includes all three forms. What arises from meditation, what is done is both merit and the basis for performing meritorious deeds, because through loving-kindness, the mind that corresponds to it is manifestly produced. The mind and discipline that arise together with it are both merit and action. Other things that arise together with it are only merit. Alternatively, performing meritorious deeds is the act of merit, that is, action. In order to accomplish these, in order to create the wealth of merit, these three are its basis. Others say that performing meritorious deeds is actually a virtuous intention, and these are its basis. If asked, what is generosity? Although what is given is also generosity, here it is: what is given with is generosity. Although one may give out of fear, expectation of reward, attachment, etc., this is not desired here, so in order to distinguish it, it is said, "Desiring to make offerings and benefit." That is, giving with the intention of making offerings and benefiting others. What is given with, what is it? Body and speech accompanied by supplication. What is supplication? In what way is it supplicated? Here it is said: When a person with a virtuous mind gives his possessions and speech, at that time the accumulation of virtues is called generosity. That is it. It enjoys the fruition.

Possessing great wealth. The merit arising from generosity, as the basis for action, is indeed a fruit of abundant wealth. The term "arising" should be understood as referring to inherent nature. For example, a house arising from roots, a vessel arising from leaves, and so on. Furthermore, generosity is for the sake of oneself or others, or for the sake of both. It is not generosity if it is not for the sake of both. For those who have not yet detached from desire, or ordinary individuals who have not detached from desire, giving to a stupa, because they do not benefit others, is generosity for the sake of their own benefit alone. Noble ones, detached from desire, give to other sentient beings, and this generosity, apart from experiencing the result in this very life, is for the sake of others because they have benefited them, and not for the sake of themselves, because they have completely transcended the ground of maturation. Those who have not detached from desire, or ordinary individuals detached from desire, give to other sentient beings, and this generosity is for the sake of both. Noble ones, detached from desire, make offerings to a stupa, and this generosity, apart from experiencing the result in this very life, is not for the sake of both, because it is merely offering out of respect and gratitude. In general, the fruit of generosity is abundant wealth. Its distinction lies in the distinction of the giver, the object, and the field. Firstly, the giver is distinguished by their excellent faith and so on. A giver endowed with qualities such as faith, discipline, and learning is particularly excellent. The generosity of such a giver becomes particularly excellent in producing results due to the giver's special qualities. Such givers give with respect and so on. They give with respect, with their own hands, at the right time, and without harming others. Therefore, they obtain great respect, timely and without obstacles. Therefore, this giver, giving in this way, sequentially produces four kinds of excellence: respect

Wealth will be obtained. Faith in vast enjoyment will arise and be obtained. Enjoyment will not expire, it will be obtained in due time. Enjoyment will be without obstacles, this enjoyment will not be interrupted by other things, nor will it be destroyed by fire, etc. How does one become a superior giver? The superiority of giving has already been explained through his superiority. How does an object become superior? Objects that are complete in color, etc., are called superior. If what is to be given is complete in any of color, smell, taste, and touch, then that is a superior object. What will happen by giving such an object? In order, one will obtain beauty and fame from it, joy and very youthful skin, and if touched at the right time, one will become a body of bliss. Complete touch
