When the Bhagavan Bodhisattva became a Buddha, I also wish to become a Buddha in this very manner, this was the initial aspiration. This only occurred during times of strife, and may his teachings remain until the end of time. Furthermore, in what circumstances does a Bodhisattva perfect the perfections? Towards all beings, with compassion, one gives alms, thus generosity is perfected. In what aspect, towards all beings, even eyes and feet, without expecting any superior distinction, one gives with compassion, just that alone perfects the perfection of generosity. Even if limbs are severed while still attached to desire, one does not become agitated, that is discipline and patience. When, at the time of not being separated from desire, even if limbs are severed, one does not become even slightly agitated, at that time, these perfections of discipline and patience are perfected. By praising the Star King, one perfects diligence. When the Bhagavan became a Bodhisattva, upon seeing the Tathagata Star King entering the fire element concentration in a mountain cave, standing on one foot for seven days, he praised him, saying: 'Such an excellent being as you, other great ascetics do not exist in the heavenly realms. They do not exist in this world, nor in the realm of Vaishravana. They do not exist in the excellent abodes of the heavenly palaces, nor in any direction or intermediate direction. Where could there be one place throughout the entire earth, complete with mountains and forests?' At the time of praising with this one verse, the perfection of diligence was also perfected, and it is said that nine eons were also shortened. Immediately after that, at the time of the Vajra-like Samadhi immediately preceding the awakening of the mind of Samadhi, the perfections of meditation and wisdom were also perfected, and for the sake of the perfections of their own completeness, they are the perfections. From the sutra, the merit arising from generosity is the basis of good deeds, the merit arising from discipline is the basis of good deeds, and the merit arising from meditation is the basis of good deeds, thus the three bases of merit are spoken of. How are they three?
