What is seeing? And what is it up to discernment? Some say that what is manifested by the five senses is seeing. What comes from elsewhere is hearing. What is desired through inference by one's own reasoning is understanding. What becomes manifest in the mind, and is realized individually through meditation, is discernment. Moreover, each of these five objects can be labeled as seeing, hearing, understanding, or discernment. The sixth does not include seeing. In that case, there would be no way to label smells, etc., but there would be no fault in that. Therefore, that reasoning is not valid. Former teachers said: What is manifested by the eye is seeing. What is heard by the ear, and what comes from elsewhere, is hearing. What is thought by oneself is understanding. What is individually and correctly recognized and understood by oneself is discernment. Incidentally, the borrowed words end here. We shall enter the treatise. If the actions of the body cause others to understand other meanings, will it become lying? Yes, it will. Therefore, if the body does not act, will it be touched by the fault of killing? Yes, it will. Even the actions of speech will be so. If speech does not act, will it be touched by the fault of lying? Yes, it will. Even the actions of the body will be so. If neither the body nor speech acts, will one be touched by two faults? Yes, one will. Here, the example of practitioners with extremely angry minds and fasting should be given. If neither of the two acts, then the non-revealing and non-revealing aspects of acting in desire do not exist, so how do these two accomplish the path of action? One should strive for this. Lying ends here. Slander is for separating others. Words of an afflicted mind. Words of an afflicted mind that are meant to separate others and cause discord are slander, meaning that the meaning is clear and easy to understand.

It should be combined with what is called non-false. Harsh speech is unpleasant. Language associated with a mind afflicted with disturbing emotions, and whose meaning is obvious and not false, should be combined. Whatever unpleasant words are spoken by someone with a disturbed mind, and whatever is spoken whose meaning is obvious, speaking to whomever one wishes to speak to, that is harsh speech. All disturbing emotions are idle talk. It should be combined in terms of "speech." All language associated with disturbing emotions is idle talk. It itself is idle talk, and what is associated with it is an idle talker. Others are different from that, they are disturbing emotions. Some say that other than the verbal actions of lying, etc., whatever language is associated with disturbing emotions is idle talk. For example, like a monk who lives by wrong livelihood flattering, some singing because of attachment, performers babbling at the time of performance in order to please others, and being absorbed in that and reciting bad treatises, similarly, reciting dirges, and idle talk, etc., other than lying, etc., whatever language is associated with disturbing emotions is also idle talk. How is it that when a wheel-turning king is in power, there is also singing, but it is not idle talk? Because at that time, songs that are in accordance with renunciation are sung, but not those that are in accordance with evil mantras. Some say that at that time there are also expressions such as taking a bride and sending off a bride, so although there is idle talk, it is not a path of action. Greed is: wrongly clinging to the wealth of others. Thinking, 'How wonderful it would be if what belongs to others became mine,' and then by means of force or secret means, wanting to make the wealth of others one's own in an improper way, that is the path of action of greed. Some say that all craving that engages in desire is greed. For example, at the time of obscuration, taking desire as the dominant factor, the sutra says, "Having abandoned greed in the world," and so on. Some say that wheel-turning kings and the northern sound

Even for unpleasant things, there will be a path of action of covetousness. If everything is covetousness, but not everything is a path of action, because evil conduct has been summarized. Harmful intent is hatred towards sentient beings. Having hatred towards sentient beings, appearing in the form of harming others, is harmful intent. The view that there is no good and non-good is a wrong view. The view that there is no good karma and non-good karma is a wrong view. For example, thinking that there is no giving, no offering, no fire offering, no good conduct, no bad conduct, and so on, until thinking that there are no Arhats in the world, slandering karma, results, and the noble ones, this is completely a wrong view. In the verses, only the beginning is simply introduced. The definitions of these ten paths of action are like that. What is the meaning of the path of action? Here, three or seven are also actions. Covetousness and the like are three paths of action, so they are paths of action. The thoughts that correspond to them are the cause of them, because they are the cause; because they manifest under their control, they proceed according to their rules. Killing and the like are seven actions of body and speech, so they are both actions and paths of action, because they are paths of action. The thoughts that initiate these actions arise depending on them. Therefore, it is both a path of action, and action and path of action, so it is a path of action, because it can be realized unified even for different things. Not having covetousness and the like, and refraining from killing and the like, should also be understood in the same way. Why
