Explaining non-restraint without protection No, even if the basis is completely abandoned, it is like an old disease that cannot be cured without medicine. If someone with non-restraint takes the vows of Uposatha, will this become even more non-restraint than that vow? Or will it become something that is neither restraint nor non-restraint? Some say that because there is no intention to abandon it forever, it will become non-restraint, just as a burning iron hammer also turns blue. Others say that obtaining it is because it is completely devoted to expression, and it will not change if the combination is not done. Then, how is non-expression, other than restraint and non-restraint, abandoned? The action taken by the intermediate force, and the meaning, lifespan, and root severance, etc., the non-expression thrown away by the power of great joy and affliction, that severance will also be explained, like a potter's wheel and the movement of an arrow. If it is said that this correctly taken is enough, and abandoning the correct taking, then it will be explained even more than abandoning the completely taken. Just like things that are not done according to the way they were taken, they will be explained even more than explained. The explanation of meaning will be explained even more than explained. What meaning? The life severance of objects such as stupas, monasteries, temples, bedding, cushions, clothes, copperware, etc., will also be explained. The explanation of the roots of virtue will also be explained even more, that is, when one begins to completely cut off the roots of virtue. In this way, through these six causes, non-expression will be abandoned. The non-form virtue belonging to the desire realm, from the root severance or arising upwards, the non-form virtue practiced in the desire realm is abandoned through two causes: completely cutting off the roots of virtue, or being born in the form and formless realms. Affliction-related non-form, changes through the arising of antidotes, affliction-related non-form, everything in the three realms, changes through the arising of antidotes, that is, with whatever antidote path one abandons the near afflictions, with this

It completely abandons afflictions and their retinue, and not otherwise. Furthermore, which sentient beings do not have vows? And which ones do have vows? Hermaphrodites, eunuchs, and mutes; except for those with two sets of genitals, people do not have vows. The absence of vows exists only in the human realm, and not in others. Among them, hermaphrodites, eunuchs, those with two sets of genitals, and the mutes of the north are exceptions. Vows are also the same, even for gods. Vows, as mentioned before, exist in humans and gods, except for those mentioned, so vows exist in two realms. How do we know that hermaphrodites, etc., do not have vows? It is known from the Sutras and Vinaya. In the Sutra, it says: 'Great name, for example, a householder wearing white clothes, a man with male sexual organs, from taking refuge in the Buddha until saying the words, "Please accept me as a lay follower," just doing this will make him a lay follower.' The Vinaya also clearly explains it in the same way. Why do these people not have vows? Because the afflictions of both bases are very strong, they cannot discern separately, and they do not have a strong sense of shame and embarrassment. Then, why is there no non-vow? Because even the thought of sin is not firm. Whoever has vows also has non-vows, because they are antidotes to each other. For the mutes of the north, because they do not properly receive and do not have samadhi, and they do not have the intention to do evil, they have neither vows nor non-vows. For beings in the lower realms, what do they have and what do they not have that makes them vows and non-vows? They do not have a strong sense of shame and embarrassment. Furthermore, the bodies of hermaphrodites, eunuchs, those with two sets of genitals, and beings in the lower realms are like barren land, which cannot produce vows or non-vows. Just as in barren land, neither grain nor weeds can grow. Then, how should we interpret what is said in the Sutra: 'Monks, the dragon born from an egg appears on the eighth day of the half-month and abides near the eight-branch fast'?
