Therefore, it is considered that this is the Pratimoksha vow for taming the senses. The Pratimoksha vow other than the Upavasatha vow is abandoned due to four reasons: abandoning the objects of learning from the bottom of one's heart in front of someone who cannot understand; abandoning the same kind; the simultaneous occurrence of the precepts; and the cutting off of all roots of virtue. The precepts of the Upavasatha vow are abandoned due to those reasons and the passing of the night. In short, there are five reasons for abandoning the vow. Why is the vow abandoned due to these reasons? Because it generates behavior that contradicts the correct acceptance; abandoning the basis; the basis is damaged; the root is cut off; and it continues until then. Some say it starts from falling into sin. Others say that the precepts of monks and novices are abandoned due to any of the four sins. Others say it starts from the disappearance of the true Dharma. Others say it starts from the disappearance of the true Dharma, just like this, if the true Dharma disappears, then all the objects of learning and the boundaries of activities will disappear. The Kashmiris think that it is two kinds, like debt and property. The Vaibhashikas of Kashmir think like this: even if the root sin occurs, the precepts will not be abandoned. Why? Because it is unreasonable to abandon the precepts just because a part is damaged. Even if other sins occur, the precepts will not be lost. So, how should it be understood? Here there are both precepts and broken precepts, for example, some people have both property and debt. If that sin is repented, then it is having precepts, not broken precepts, for example, repaying the debt is having property, not being in debt. So, what does the World Honored One mean by saying, "Not a monk, not a novice, not a son of Shakya, retreating from the real affairs of the Shramana, his Shramana practice is destroyed, retreating, destroying, falling, failing"? This refers to the perspective of a true meaning monk. This is too much. How should this be understood?

Now, what is the definitive meaning of what the Blessed One said? It is to lead to other places. For many afflictions, it is also a condition for engaging in dissolute conduct. How is that the definitive meaning? In the Vinaya, it is said that there are four kinds of monks: the monk in name, the monk by claim, the monk by begging, and the monk by subduing afflictions. In this sense, the monk who has taken full ordination through the request and the four karmas is the true monk. Therefore, it is not the case that someone who was previously a monk in the definitive sense later becomes a non-monk. What was said about "one aspect declining" was answered by the Teacher himself. For example, just as cutting off the head of a palm tree cannot make it turn green again, cannot grow, expand, or widen. What is the meaning of the metaphor? Even if one aspect of the root is cut off, the remaining precepts cannot increase. That is to say, if a monk commits a fundamental and grave offense that destroys the boundaries of things, because he possesses great shamelessness, the root of the precepts is cut off, the precepts are exhausted, and it is appropriate to abandon them. The Teacher did not allow even the enjoyment of abandoning a mouthful of food or a step in the monastic meal and monastery, which is stricter than all the enjoyments of a monk. By whose will is it said? To monks who are not monks, eliminate the mixture of speech. Rotten trees should be abandoned, and those without essence should be discarded. Having said that, no matter what kind of monastic object it is, no matter what it is, there is always a monastic object. For example, the Blessed One said, "O monks, there are four kinds of ascetics, and there is no fifth: the king of the path, the guide of the path, the one who lives for the path, and the one who destroys the path." Although it has been said, it is only called an ascetic because only the flesh remains, like a burnt tree, a dried-up lake, a parrot's beak, a rotten seed, a burning fire wheel, and a dead being. If one becomes a non-monk because of dissolute discipline, then there will be no one to give teachings.

In the Sutra of All Offenses, one does not say that he is a 'severed-head one.' Whoever is a 'severed-head one' is definitely not a female renunciate. Some, due to differences in their disposition, are not 'severed-head ones,' because they do not conceal any faults, so they should be placed in accordance with the Dharma. If a 'severed-head one' is a female monastic, why is she not ordained? It is because shamelessness predominates in her disposition, and she is defiled by sins, so she has no eligibility for vows. This is not because of concern for the possessions of a female monastic, but because even if she has offered the robe, she cannot be ordained. Why strive in this meaningless matter? If such a one is also a monastic, then I prostrate to such a monastic. When the sacred Dharma declines, because there is no tool for taming, it is impossible to obtain unprecedented taming, but what has already been obtained is not abandoned. How then are meditative concentration and undefiled vows abandoned? The virtue belonging to meditative concentration is abandoned through the shifting and decaying of grounds. All the virtue belonging to meditative concentration is abandoned through two causes: either being born from a higher ground to a lower one, that is, from the shifting of grounds; or from the complete decay of the ground in meditative absorption. Abandoning what is similar will also slightly abandon some. Just as the virtue belonging to form is abandoned through shifting and complete decay, similarly, the noble ones belonging to the formless realm are abandoned through the attainment of results, cultivation, and decay. Undefiled virtue is abandoned through three causes: through the attainment of results, the previous path is abandoned; through cultivating the faculties, the path of dull faculties is abandoned; through complete decay, the higher path, that is, the result or a special result, is abandoned. For the time being, vows are abandoned in this way. Non-vows are abandoned through obtaining vows, and through death and the arising of characteristics. Non-vows are severed through three causes: through obtaining vows, if one truly takes vows, or through the power of causes and conditions, one obtains meditative concentration, thereby obtaining the vows of meditative concentration, because the power of the antidote is strong, it will sever non-vows. Because of abandoning the body, one dies, and because the basis decays, characteristics arise, and non-vows are abandoned. Even if one has abandoned from the depths of one's heart the thought of weapons and non-action, vows
