And, discriminating dharma is a branch of perfect enlightenment, being both enlightenment and a branch of enlightenment, just as concentration is both meditation and a branch of meditation, they say. Those themselves, such as right view, cannot serve as branches of those themselves. If the former, such as right view, become branches of the latter, then the noble path arising in the first moment would not become the eightfold path. Furthermore, is this Uposatha only for lay practitioners? Or do others also have it? Others also have Uposatha, but those who have not taken refuge do not. Even for those who are not lay practitioners, if someone on that day takes refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and receives the Uposatha vows, then that person will generate the precepts of the Uposatha, but not otherwise. Unless they do not know. The sutra says: "Great Name, for example, a householder wearing white clothes, possessing male faculties, goes for refuge to the Buddha, goes for refuge to the Dharma, goes for refuge to the Sangha, and also says the words, 'Please accept me as a lay practitioner,' does this much make him a lay practitioner?" Some say that merely taking refuge makes one a lay practitioner. The Kashmiris say that without vows, one cannot become a lay practitioner. So, what does the sutra say? There is no contradiction here; in this way, only the one who has promised to become a lay practitioner will generate these vows. When he says, "Please accept me as a lay practitioner, from now until the end of my life, I will abandon killing," only the one who has promised to become a lay practitioner will generate the lay practitioner's vows here. "Abandoning killing" is a summary term, because the intermediate words are not manifest. Even if one has obtained the vows, it is necessary to teach them like a monk in order to understand the training. Just as after monks and novices have obtained their vows, they are again made to uphold the training, saying, "You should guard in this way and that way," lay practitioners are also the same, so there is no lay practitioner without vows.

If everything is discipline, then how to explain things like practicing a portion? If all lay practitioners abide in the discipline of lay practitioners, then how to explain the Blessed One's saying of lay practitioners who practice "a portion," "one side," "mostly," and "completely"? It is said that this was spoken for the sake of guarding. Whatever is guarded of the basis of training, that is said to be practicing it, but it seems that everything abides in discipline. This transcends the sutra. What here transcends the sutra? Like this, it is said that merely vowing "to abandon killing" obtains the discipline of a lay practitioner, but the words of the sutra are not like that. What are the words of the sutra like? Just as it appears from what is said in the Great Name Sutra, it is only there that the characteristics of a lay practitioner are shown, and not elsewhere. From where does it begin? Like this, from "until life, taking refuge in life and dedication, manifestly rejoicing," there, those who have seen the truth know that "even if it comes to life, we must not abandon this Dharma," and through the cause of faith, even for the sake of life, they vow to uphold the holy Dharma, which shows this, but it is not showing the characteristics of discipline. If "abandoning killing" does not appear from anywhere, then who would bring up this completely unclear meaning? If, considering the decline of moral conduct, even the question of practicing a portion is not reasonable, then what need is there to mention an answer? Who does not know that the so-called lay practitioner's discipline is that whoever does not violate any basis of training, that is practicing it? Since the entirety of the lay practitioner's discipline is not understood, and only so much of the basis of training is tolerated, then to what extent must a monk become a lay practitioner who practices a portion? The question from "is it so" to "completely practicing" is reasonable. If one can become a lay practitioner even without discipline or without completeness, then one would also become a monk and a novice. For the time being, how are the limbs of the lay practitioner's discipline, etc., determined? It is by the power of the teacher's designation. The lay practitioner himself, etc., is also the teacher's designation.
