If one properly takes non-restraint during this period, one will undoubtedly attain it. This is because it is not seen, so it cannot be established in this way. The Sutra School masters say that non-restraint, like non-manifest form, does not exist as a substance, but the very thought of committing sins that is connected with it is non-restraint. Therefore, even with a virtuous mind, it is called having it because it has not been abandoned. Furthermore, if one takes the upavāsa for a day and night, how should one take it? By sitting low, speaking, and reciting. Not adorned, or until the next morning. To have complete limbs of the upavāsa, one should take it from another in the morning. Sitting low means sitting squatting or kneeling, with the palms crossed or joined, except for the sick. Without respect, the vows will not arise. The giver of vows should not speak, nor should he speak before, nor should he speak contemptuously. If so, this is taken from another, otherwise the giving and taking of vows will not be accomplished. Not adorned means except for regular ornaments, regular ornaments should not suddenly become gorgeous. To be taken until the next morning means until sunrise. One should take the complete eight limbs, not incomplete limbs. The next morning means temporarily at sunrise, because it is a vow for day and night. If someone has previously made a correct vow to abide in the upavāsa on the eighth day of each month, then even after eating, one can take it. It is not taken from oneself, but from another, because relying on another, one should not transgress even if there are obstacles, otherwise taking it from another is only a virtuous act, not the vow of upavāsa. If done in this way, butchers and eunuchs can also make the upavāsa of night and day fruitful. Because this brings one close to the Arhats, it is upavāsa, because it is following them. Others say that it is upavāsa because it brings one close to the vows until the end of life. Or in order to nourish the small roots of virtue, because it nourishes the virtue of the mind.

It is said that this is the Uposatha taught by the Blessed One. Therefore, this is Uposatha. Why take the eight limbs? The limbs of morality are those of mindfulness, the limbs of asceticism are limbs, four, one, likewise, three in order. For a while, the four up to abstaining from lying are limbs of morality because they abandon the naturally blameworthy. Abstaining from intoxicating drinks is the only limb of mindfulness, because drinking intoxicating drinks, even if morality is complete, one becomes unmindful. The three up to abstaining from untimely food are limbs of asceticism because they conform to the world. What happens if these limbs of mindfulness and asceticism are not taken? It causes loss of memory and arrogance. Drinking intoxicating drinks causes loss of memory of what should and should not be done. Relying on high thrones and great thrones, and dancing and singing, etc., causes arrogance, and for those who become arrogant, immoral conduct is not far off. Eating at the right time and completely abandoning food during the fasting period brings the mindfulness of fasting and the mindfulness of renunciation closer, and without them, neither exists. Some also think that only abstaining from untimely food is the Uposatha here, and the rest are its limbs, such as dancing, singing, music, incense, flower garlands, and ornaments, which should be divided into two here. If that is the case, then the precept of abstaining from untimely food, and the words of the sutra that says, "With these eight limbs, one follows the training of those noble Arhats and practices accordingly," would be inappropriate. Then, to which Uposatha do these eight limbs belong? What is that other Uposatha? The Vaibhashikas say that the assembled limbs are limbs, just as the limbs of a chariot and the four limbs of an army, and the five limbs of flour, the eight limbs of Uposatha should be viewed in the same way. Abstaining from untimely food is both Uposatha and a limb of Uposatha, for example, right view is both the path and a limb of the path.
