This which does not make expression is non-expression. Speech: Is idle talk expressive or non-expressive? Answer: It is both expressive and non-expressive. What is expressive? Answer: For example, here someone says to someone else, "Speak idle talk to others!" Even if he says, "I will speak," or even if he is warned, "Do not speak!" he says, "I will speak." Then, he goes elsewhere and speaks idle talk to others, or he comes back and speaks idle talk to others. When he speaks idle talk to others, then that verbal action at that time is expressive. What is non-expressive? Answer: Because idle talk has not returned, has not retreated, has not been given up, has not been abandoned, therefore, even if speech does not make expression, this is non-expression. Are covetousness, malice, and wrong view expressive or non-expressive? Answer: They are neither expressive nor non-expressive. Starting from what is called the ten paths of non-virtuous actions and elaborating, is killing a sentient being with form or without form? Answer: It is with form. Similarly, are taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, and idle talk with form or without form? Answer: They are with form. Are covetousness, malice, and wrong view with form or without form? Answer: They are without form. Starting from what is called the ten paths of non-virtuous actions and elaborating, is killing a sentient being obstructive or unobstructed? Answer: It is both obstructive and unobstructed. What is obstructive? Answer: Whatever is expressive. What is unobstructed? Answer: Whatever is non-expressive. Just like killing, taking what is not given

, as well as sexual misconduct with desire, false speech, divisive speech, harsh speech, and idle chatter are also similar to this. Greed, malice, and wrong view, are they with obstruction or without obstruction? The answer is: they are without obstruction. The ten non-virtuous paths of action, starting from there, are explained in detail. Is killing born from the mind, or is it not born from the mind? The answer is: it is not born from the mind. Just like killing, taking what is not given, sexual misconduct with desire, false speech, divisive speech, harsh speech, and idle chatter are also similar to this. Greed, malice, and wrong view, are they born from the mind, or are they not born from the mind? The answer is: they are born from the mind. The ten non-virtuous paths of action, starting from there, are explained in detail. Killing is of three types: born from attachment, born from hatred, and born from ignorance. What is killing born from attachment? The answer is: for example, some people desire the meat, skin, horns, teeth, bones, tendons, or tail of some animal. Due to these reasons and conditions, they kill the animal. Or, even if they themselves do not desire it, they think: for those whom I love, cherish, like, and are satisfied with, these can become necessities and enjoyments. For their sake, they kill the animal. Or, others say to him: come here and kill such and such an animal, and I will give you this and that. I will do this and that. If he is persuaded in this way, he kills the animal because he desires those enjoyments. For example, two kings who are not in harmony, for the sake of cloth or copper coins, or a thousand copper coins, bring heads. He kills the animal because he desires those enjoyments. This is like that which is born from attachment. What is born from hatred? The answer is: as

The view is that here some people, towards someone, always harbor annoyance and a mind to kill. Therefore, they kill the life of that being. It is not so, even if they do not have annoyance and a mind to kill, but towards the beings they dislike, do not cherish, are not happy with, and are displeased with, they always harbor annoyance and a mind to kill. They think, 'Let these beings be in an unbearable, uncomfortable, and inwardly displeased state for a long time.' Therefore, they kill the life of that being, such an action arises from hatred. How does that which arises from ignorance come about? For example, some Brahmins say this: 'Spirits, sins, and creatures called Trailata, Tremabuka, and flesh-eating ghosts, etc., should be killed.' Why? They say, 'Because these are the enemies and opponents of people.' Elephants, horses, mares, cows, and donkeys, etc., should also be killed. Why? They say, 'Because these are the possessions of people.' Similarly, in the West, there are Brahmins called 'lip-born,' who say this: 'Whoever is a father, mother, brother, sister, friend, relative, or elder, if they are afflicted by illness, suffering and severely ill, killing them will increase much merit.' Why? They say, 'Because as long as they live, stay, and survive, they will continue to suffer and be displeased, but if the body is separated from this state, it will be different.' They view that action as bringing nothing, and see it as without fruit. They view it in this way and say, 'This action does not exist, the ripening of the fruit of this action does not exist.' Such an action arises from ignorance. Taking what is not given is also like that. How does that which arises from hatred come about? They say, 'For example, here some people, towards someone, always harbor annoyance and anger. Therefore, they engage in sexual misconduct with that person.' It is not so, even if they do not have annoyance and anger, but towards someone
