The Division of Karma The Division of Karma In Sanskrit: Karmaprajñapti. In Tibetan: Las Gdagpa. Homage to the Three Jewels! Summary: Intentional action and mind, past and virtuous, object and desire realm, verses and collection of karma. Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park. Then, the Blessed One addressed the monks: Monks, I show the experience of the ripening of intentionally done and accumulated actions, which will be experienced in this life, in the next life, and in other instances. Monks, among them, the intentional actions done and accumulated by the body, which are unwholesome, cause suffering, and whose ripening is suffering, are of three kinds. Those of speech are of four kinds. Those of mind are of three kinds. Monks, what are the three kinds of intentional actions done and accumulated by the body, which are unwholesome, cause suffering, and whose ripening is suffering? They are: killing, which is violent and bloodthirsty, attached to killing and utterly killing, without shame, without compassion for all sentient beings, even down to ants and insects; this is not abandoning killing. Taking what is not given, which is taking from a village or monastery what is not given, with the intention of stealing; this is not abandoning taking what is not given. Engaging in sexual misconduct, which is engaging with another's woman, another's wife, or one who is protected by others, such as protected by mother, protected by father, protected by husband, protected by siblings, protected by relatives, protected by father-in-law, protected by those of the same lineage, protected by kin, protected by those of the same clan, or one who has a penalty, or one who has an obstacle, even if adorned with a garland of flowers; engaging in such afflictions close to desire; this is not abandoning sexual misconduct. Monks, thus, these three kinds of intentional actions, done and accumulated, are unwholesome, cause suffering, and their ripening is suffering.

No! Monks, what are the four kinds of actions done and accumulated because of which are unwholesome, produce suffering, and whose ripening is suffering? Speaking falsehood, whether he is in an assembly, or in a retinue, or in the palace of a king, or in the house of a relative, being questioned by the four great ones: 'Hey, man, speak what you know, do not speak what you do not know, speak what you have seen, do not speak what you have not seen.' If he does not know but says he knows, knows but says he does not know, has not seen but says he has seen, has seen but says he has not seen, for the sake of those, or for the sake of others, for the sake of a little wealth, knowingly speaks falsehood without abandoning it. Slander is when one hears the words of those on this side, and goes to those on the other side to speak in order to divide them, and even if one hears the words of those, one goes to those on this side to speak in order to divide those on this side. In this way, dividing those who are in harmony, following those who are divided, desiring discord, delighting in discord, speaking words that lead to discord, this is not abandoning slander. Speaking harsh words is when he abandons words that are gentle and pleasing to the ear, pleasing, sweet, desirable, the language of the palace retinue, gentle and secret, complete, meaningful, pleasing to the ear, loved by many, cherished by many, pleasing to many, pleasing to many, calming, and leading to samadhi, and speaks words that are piercing, harsh, unbearable to others, detested by others, unloved by many, uncherished by many, displeasing to many, displeasing to many, not calming, and not leading to samadhi, speaking such words is not abandoning harsh words.

Thus it is. Frivolous talk is speaking out of season, speaking untruthfully, speaking insincerely, speaking without benefit, speaking slanderously, speaking unlawfully, speaking confusedly and speaking rash words, without basis, without meaning, inconsistent with meaning, and not abandoning frivolous talk such as licentious words. Monks, thus the four actions done and accumulated by speech are unwholesome, causing suffering, and their ripening is suffering. Monks, the three actions done and accumulated by mind are unwholesome, causing suffering, and their ripening is suffering. What are they? Covetousness is when one sees the possessions of others, the wealth of others, the belongings of others, one generates covetousness, thinking: Alas, how wonderful it would be if these were mine! One has not abandoned covetousness. Harming with malice is thinking: Alas, it would be good to strike these sentient beings! It would be good to kill them! It would be good to ruin them! It would be good to disturb them unreasonably! This is not abandoning the malice of harming. Wrong view is seeing things perversely and seeing in this way, saying thus: There is no giving, there is no offering, there is no fire sacrifice, there is no good conduct, there is no bad conduct, there is no ripening of the fruits of good and bad actions, there is no this world, there is no other world, there is no father, there is no mother, there is no birth of sentient beings, there are no Arhats in the world who have gone rightly, who have entered rightly, who in this world and the other world, in this very life, have realized with their own pure wisdom, having made it manifest, having practiced and understood, thinking: Our birth is exhausted, we have practiced celibacy, we have done what should be done, from this there will be no other existence, there is no such thought, this is not abandoning wrong view. Monks, thus the three actions done and accumulated by mind are unwholesome, causing suffering, and their ripening is suffering. Monks, that
