The noble disciple who possesses learning, having abandoned the non-virtuous actions of the body, cultivates the virtuous actions of the body. Having abandoned the non-virtuous actions of speech, cultivates the virtuous actions of speech. Having abandoned the non-virtuous actions of mind, cultivates the virtuous actions of mind. He abides having cultivated and pervaded one direction with a mind imbued with loving-kindness, without animosity, without malice, without harm, vast, having become great, and immeasurable. The second direction is also the same. The third is also the same. The fourth is also the same. Above and below, and in all directions directly, it is also the same. He abides having cultivated and pervaded this entire world with a mind imbued with loving-kindness. He thinks to himself: 'I have not cultivated this mind when it was small before. Now I have cultivated this mind, which is immeasurable and vast.' Monks, the mind of a noble disciple is immeasurable and vast, and has been greatly cultivated. That which was previously limited will not lead it away. It will not abide there. It will not be counted there. Monks, if a young boy or girl, from the beginning, cultivates the samadhi of loving-kindness, will he or she commit sinful actions with body, speech, or mind? Venerable ones, that is not so. Monks, well done, well done! The samadhi of loving-kindness should be cultivated by anyone, whether male or female, householder or renunciant. Why is that? Because whether male or female, householder or renunciant, will not depart carrying this body. Monks, humans arise from the cause of mind, rely on mind, depend on mind, and exercise power relying on mind. All the sinful, non-virtuous actions that this body has previously done and accumulated, the non-virtuous actions that produce suffering, that ripen into suffering, all of those will be experienced here, experienced in this very life, and not in future lives or other times.

It is not so. Monks, having cultivated the samadhi of loving-kindness in this way, even if one has not realized higher attainments, one will abide in the state of non-returning. Monks, furthermore, the noble disciple who is endowed with learning, from "having abandoned unwholesome bodily actions," and so on, extensively, being endowed with compassion, being endowed with joy, being endowed with equanimity, should also be spoken of in the same way. Thus it was said. As for what is called "deliberately done," there are two types of actions: mental action and intentional action. What is mental action? It is said: thought, manifest thought, that which has become thought, that which belongs to thought, that which manifestly performs thought, and whatever is the action of the mind, this is called mental action. What is intentional action? It is said: intentional bodily action and intentional verbal action, this is called intentional action. Among these, mental action exists in the past, also exists in the future, also exists in the present. What is past mental action? It is said: whatever thought has arisen, has truly arisen, has occurred, has been accomplished, has been manifestly accomplished, has been truly accomplished, has become occurred and has manifestly passed away, has been exhausted, has ceased, has been separated, has been transformed, has passed away, belongs to the past, and is included by past time, this is past mental action. What is future mental action? It is said: whatever thought has not arisen, has not truly arisen, has not occurred, has not truly occurred, and has not yet gone, has not manifestly been accomplished, has not occurred, is future, belongs to the future, and is included by future time, this is future mental action. What is present mental action? It is said: whatever thought has arisen, has truly arisen, has occurred, has truly occurred, has already gone, has become occurred, abides, has not been transformed, and now abides, from here extensively, this is present mental action. Among these, mental action is wholesome, unwholesome, and also unspecified. What is wholesome mental action? It is said: wholesome attention and that which is concordant with it.
