Merit merges and merit descends, just as merit descends. Therefore, the great ocean merges with merit and merit descends. Having descended with merit, it is not filled only from Mukona. The Blessed One said, "The great ocean is deep and difficult to reach the end." Why is the great ocean deep and difficult to reach the end? Answer: The great ocean is not deep and difficult to reach the end. The great ocean has a limit to its depth and a limit to its breadth. But for the water contained within it, it is impossible to measure how much water there is, or one bottle of water, or one hundred bottles of water, or one thousand bottles of water, or one million bottles of water. Therefore, the great ocean is deep and difficult to reach the end. The Blessed One said, "When the great ocean encounters the tide, it does not recede." Why does the great ocean not recede when it encounters the tide? Answer: There are two types of tides: the inner tide and the phye ma red (transliteration, meaning unknown) tide, and the great tide. What is the inner tide and the phye ma red tide? For example, creatures living in the sea become weak from hunger. In order to find food, during the inner tide they first come out of the water and go onto the land. They return hungry during the phye ma red. These creatures surge upwards and return, and from this the waves of the tide arise. This is called the inner tide and the phye ma red tide. What is the great tide? For example, beings living in the great ocean, on dates such as the eighth, fourteenth, and half of the month of miracles, come out of the water and onto the land. Those who believe in the moon worship the moon, those who believe in the sun worship the sun, those who believe in the stars worship the stars, and lay practitioners who believe in the Buddha abide in fasting. These creatures surge upwards and return, and from this the waves of the great tide arise. Therefore, the great ocean does not recede when it encounters the tide. The Blessed One said, "The great ocean is like the taste of salt, it has only one taste." Why is the great ocean like the taste of salt, with only one taste?

Then he said: From within the great ocean, creatures are born and born again, grow old and grow old again, die and die again. The impurities of their bodies and the waste of their bodies cause the great ocean to taste salty. Furthermore, there is saltiness within the great ocean, and when that dissolves, the great ocean tastes salty. Furthermore, those who do not dwell on the islands throw grass, trees, branches, leaves, fallen leaves, and petals into the rivers, and when those things all rot, the great ocean tastes salty. Therefore, the great ocean is like saltiness, with only one taste. It is said that the great ocean is filled with many jewels and various kinds of jewels. Why is the great ocean filled with many jewels and various kinds of jewels? He said: When the world was formed, the best materials, the best essence, the best things, and the best goods were gathered in that direction, and from that, Mount Meru, the king of mountains, and the seven golden mountains were formed. The remaining good elements sank into that place. Furthermore, within the great ocean, the abodes of the famous great dragon kings are filled with many jewels and various kinds of jewels. Therefore, the great ocean is filled with many jewels and various kinds of jewels. It is said that great beings dwell within the great ocean. Why do great beings dwell within the great ocean? He said: Those beings who were previously humans and who have been dwelling there, obtained enjoyments in ways that were not in accordance with the Dharma, and made themselves feel happy and satisfied. They enriched themselves with sons, wives, the noise of the marketplace, food, and drink. Those who misused these things, and those who rightly obtained these things, and those who rightly accepted these things, after their bodies were destroyed and they died, fell into evil paths and evil destinies, and were reborn among the hell beings. Those hell beings, after dying and transmigrating from the hells, due to the residue of their karma, will be reborn as animals within the great ocean, and those there will have huge bodies.
