རྒྱུ་གདགས་པ། (Establishing Causes) རྒྱུ་གདགས་པ། (Establishing Causes) In Sanskrit: Kāraṇaprajñāsti. In Tibetan: རྒྱུ་གདགས་པ། (Establishing Causes). Volume One. Homoage to the Three Jewels! Thus I have heard, once, the Blessed One was dwelling in the Deer Park at Ṛṣipatana (Sarnath) in Vārāṇasī. At that time, many monks were gathered in the service hall. Those assembled were discussing such topics as: "Venerable ones, a great being endowed with the thirty-two marks of a great man will transform into two forms; he will not transform into any other form. If he dwells in a house and remains in a home, he will become a wheel-turning king, conquering in all four directions, a king of Dharma possessing Dharma, endowed with the seven precious things. These seven precious things are as follows: the precious wheel, the precious elephant, the precious horse, the precious jewel, the precious woman, the precious householder, and the seventh, the precious minister. He will have a thousand sons, brave and valiant, possessing the finest limbs, all capable of utterly destroying the enemy's forces. He will subdue the entire great earth up to the great ocean with Dharma, without harm or injury, without punishment, without weapons, in accordance with Dharma, and will dwell peacefully and justly. If he shaves off his hair and beard, puts on ochre robes, and goes forth from home to homelessness out of faith, then in this world he will become a Thus-Gone One, an Arhat, a Perfectly Awakened Buddha, and his fame will spread far and wide. How wonderful!" Many monks gathered in the service hall, and those assembled were discussing such topics. The Blessed One, while dwelling in meditation during the day, heard it with his divine ear, which is purified and surpasses human hearing. Having heard it, the Blessed One arose from his meditation in the afternoon and went to the service hall. Having arrived, the Blessed One sat down on the seat prepared in the midst of the community of monks. Having sat down, the Blessed One addressed the monks: "Monks, monks."

Having gathered and assembled in the assembly hall, what did you discuss at that time? For what discussion are you now gathered and seated? Thus he asked. The monks, having bowed with their palms joined towards where the Blessed One was, spoke thus to the Blessed One: Venerable ones, we, many monks, having gathered in this assembly hall, at that time discussed such a topic: Those endowed with the thirty-two marks of a great person will become two things, not otherwise. If they remain in a house and dwell in a home, they will become a wheel-turning king, and even become a Tathagata, an Arhat, a perfectly complete Buddha in this world, and their voice will be widely proclaimed, which is wonderful. Venerable ones, we, many monks, having gathered in this assembly hall, at that time discussed this topic, and for that topic, we are now gathered here. After they had spoken thus, the Blessed One spoke to the many monks: Monks, with which marks of a great person is a great person endowed, who will become two things, not otherwise? If they remain in a house and dwell in a home, they will become a wheel-turning king who conquers the four directions, and even, in detail, become a Tathagata, an Arhat, a perfectly complete Buddha in this world, and their voice will be widely proclaimed. What are those thirty-two marks of a great person? Thus he asked. Those monks, having bowed with their palms joined towards where the Blessed One was, spoke thus to the Blessed One: Venerable one, the root of all dharmas is the Blessed One, the teacher is the Blessed One, therefore, please explain that meaning well to the monks. If they hear it from the Blessed One, the monks will retain it. Monks, therefore listen well and keep it well in mind, and I will speak. Monks, the great person's feet are very firmly planted, this
