Because they have not relied upon and cultivated, they have not increased. Furthermore, those who have become seers have not universally relied upon and cultivated, so they have not increased; auspiciousness and goodness have not been universally relied upon and cultivated, so they have not increased; and entering the stream of dependent origination of this very cause, for the five aggregates of clinging, that is to say: This is form. This is the arising of form. This is the cessation of form. This is feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness. This is the arising of consciousness. This is the cessation of consciousness, thus, by seeing birth and death, one considers it to be permanent. Furthermore, he guards the doors of the senses, universally relying upon and cultivating them, so he increases; not guarding the doors of the senses, he does not universally rely upon and cultivate them, so he does not increase; similarly, for knowing the measure of food, and striving not to sleep in the upper and lower parts of the night, for striving to cultivate calm abiding, for striving to cultivate insight, he universally relies upon and cultivates rational attention, so he increases; he does not universally rely upon and cultivate irrational attention, so he does not increase. Furthermore, among those sentient beings who are not heavily obscured by ignorance, who are those who die and are reborn most recently and quickly? That is to say: sages, renunciates, householders, and gods who abide in the form and formless realms. Because of this reason, they will not become heavily obscured by ignorance. The seventh chapter from the great treatise "Treatise on Causes". The verses are: border and inquiry, stiffness, rising upwards and heaviness and entering, decay and breath moving, day and night, fish and dry land, turtles. The Blessed One said: Monks, the prior limit of craving for existence is not seen, but craving for existence has not arisen previously from here, and will not arise from here in the future, because of what cause does craving for existence arise? Only manifestation. If it is said thus, is there something that exists but does not appear? Or does something not exist but appear? The answer is: there is.

It is not visible because it exists, but not because it exists. Because all sentient beings with ignorance think like this: We existed in the past, and we were not non-existent in the past. If they think like this, they will become permanent. If they think like this: We did not exist in the past, then they will fall into annihilation. All formations are with causes, and the cause of these formations is the previous formations, and the cause of those formations is also the earlier formations. If the previous limit becomes apparent, then the first formation will arise from no cause. Why does one die without being free from desire? If the body is cremated, the body will emit a foul odor. If one dies free from desire, even if the body is cremated, it will not emit a foul odor? The answer is: If one dies without being free from desire, impurities will arise and semen will flow out, and the impurities will pervade all the faculties of the body. If it is cremated, the body will emit a foul odor, and those who are known to have great divine power will also make offerings to the body, and mostly will not be happy in order to eliminate the foul odor of the body. If one dies free from desire, impurities will not arise, and semen will not flow out, and impurities will not pervade all the faculties of the body. If the body is cremated, the body will not emit a foul odor, and those who are known to have great divine power will also make offerings to the body, and mostly will be happy in order to eliminate the foul odor of the body. Therefore, starting from "because of this reason," it should be explained in detail. Why does the body become stiff and not soft when one dies without being free from desire? And why is the body of one who dies free from desire soft and not stiff? The answer is: When one dies without being free from desire, the wind rises upwards from the abdomen, so the body is stiff and not soft. When one dies free from desire, the wind does not rise upwards from the abdomen, so the body is soft and not stiff. Therefore, starting from "because of this reason," it should be explained in detail.
