They knock those beings to the ground, dig out the skin and vertebrae from the left and right armpits and eat them. From "is" onwards, as before, it is about hundreds of thousands of mi-ting (transliteration of Sanskrit Man-sthita, a unit of length) high, with sharp thorns sixteen fingers long, appearing like a string of blue garlands. Those sentient beings enter it, seeking a place to dwell, as before, and they climb it. When they climb it, the thorns all point downwards; when they fall back down, the thorns all point upwards. In that iron Śālmalī (silk-cotton tree) grove, there dwell those called iron-beaked crows. They perch on the shoulders or heads of those sentient beings, pecking at their eyes, pecking and eating, piercing their heads, and sucking out their brains. In that iron tree Śālmalī grove, there are iron pots, mansions, and containers filled with boiling alkaline water. When those sentient beings are tormented and fall from the iron tree Śālmalī grove, those hell guardians seize those sentient beings and throw them headfirst into the iron pots or mansions. They also go into them and are boiled and cooked. Those from the river called the All-Crossing River, following the direction of the water, emit all kinds of sounds, and all the hair, skin, flesh, and blood are sucked away, leaving only the skeleton.
