Namely: the small thousandfold world, the intermediate two-thousandfold world, and the great three-thousandfold world. What is the small thousandfold world? In the three-thousandfold world, whatever suns appear in various ways, circling and illuminating the directions, that is it. Bhikkhus, just as when raindrops the size of chariot axles fall from the sky, the streams of water flow rapidly without interruption, similarly, bhikkhus, with my divine eye, which is purified and surpasses the human, I see that in the eastern direction, there is such a three-thousand great thousand world-system, without end and without limit, with others decaying or being destroyed, and forming or being established, with others decaying and others being destroyed, and others forming and others being established. Similarly, in the south, west, and north directions, there are so many three-thousand great thousand world-systems, without end and without limit, existing in destruction or decay, and forming or being established, with others decaying and others being destroyed, and others forming and others being established. Having spoken thus, the Blessed One departed to his dwelling place in order to enter into meditation. At that time, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana was also present in that assembly. In a thousandfold world-system, there are two thousand great mountains, namely, a thousand Mount Sumerus, the king of mountains, and a thousand surrounding mountains. In a thousandfold world-system, there are two thousand great oceans, namely, a thousand inner great oceans and a thousand outer great oceans. In a thousandfold world-system, there are three thousand mountains, namely, a thousand hells, a thousand animals, and a thousand pretas. In a thousandfold world-system, there are four thousand great continents, namely, a thousand eastern Videhas, a thousand southern Jambudvīpas, a thousand western Godāniyas, and a thousand northern Kuru.
