Just as you are permanent, so too should all conditioned phenomena be permanent. Just as there is no difference among all emptinesses, so too should their own characteristics be without difference. Furthermore, just as yogis cannot find the ultimate suchness that is superior to emptiness, so too will it be impossible to find the ultimate suchness that is superior to the characteristics of conditioned phenomena. Therefore, it is not different from them. Nor is it other, for what reason? Because it is merely the selflessness of those, like the whiteness of a conch shell, it is merely without inherent existence. Furthermore, if it were different from them, then those who see the truth would not be able to subdue the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, and therefore they would not be liberated from the bonds of characteristics and the bonds of bad migrations. Therefore, they would not reach nirvana and perfect Buddhahood either. Furthermore, this would not be the common characteristic of conditioned phenomena, and the characteristics of complete affliction and complete purification would also simultaneously become distinct. Therefore, this is not different from them, namely: The object of two non-existent things, The characteristic of the emptiness of things, Not a thing nor a non-thing, Not a different nor a single characteristic. Thus it is said. Such is the characteristic of emptiness, just as its names are: Suchness, the ultimate reality, signlessness, ultimate meaning, the realm of phenomena, the nature of phenomena, and so forth. Therefore, the meaning of the names is suchness because it is unchanging, because it abides at all times. Reality is suchness, and its limit is the most excellent, therefore it is the ultimate reality. Because this has no signs, it is signless, because all the signs of elaboration have ceased, therefore it is focused on that. The noble is the wisdom that transcends the world, and the meaning is its object, therefore it is the ultimate meaning. Dharma is the dharmas of the noble ones, it is the cause of those, therefore it is the realm, because by focusing on that, those arise, therefore it is the realm of phenomena. The dharma of things

Since it is self-nature, it is the nature of Dharma. Here, its distinctions are explained: In the previous state, it is also of the nature of complete affliction, possessing sudden defilements; later, by abandoning those through the noble path, it becomes completely pure and without defilements. For example, just as the elements of water, gold, and space are pure in nature, but become defiled by sudden impurities such as copper and dirt, and are separated from those. Therefore, it is neither completely afflicted nor impure, because the Dharma-nature of the mind is naturally luminous, so it is not completely afflicted; nor is it pure, because it is stained by sudden defilements. That is: It is with defilement and without defilement, completely afflicted and extremely pure, the elements of water, gold, and space, like that, purity is thought to be pure. If that affliction were not its nature, all embodied beings would be liberated. If that purity were not its nature, effort would be fruitless and toilsome. Affliction is neither existent nor non-existent, it is neither pure nor impure, the self-nature of the mind is inherently luminous, all afflictions are sudden. Thus it is said. Among those eight consciousnesses that have been taught, which one, how, and for how long does it enter into cyclic existence? For a while, the alaya-consciousness ripens into a good rebirth through virtuous actions, and into a bad rebirth through non-virtuous actions. When the ripening of previous actions is exhausted, it is generated by the karmic imprints associated with clinging to the apprehended and the apprehender. Having arisen, it also continues like a stream until the end of life. After that, it also arises in the same way elsewhere and continuously enters. The Blessed One said: The taking consciousness is deep and subtle, flowing like a stream, it is the place of all seeds. It is not permissible to conceive of it as self. This I have not taught to children. Thus it is said. That will cease at the state of an Arhat. The afflicted mind arises from and enters into that very alaya-consciousness. It ceases when the supramundane path is realized and when entering into the cessation. Having arisen from those states, it also enters from the alaya itself.
