The smell of camphor and pus, and the taste of sweetness and sourness, and the touch of cold and heat, and happiness and suffering, and desire and hatred and the sky, Nirvana and so on are dharmas. Thus, there are six realms of objects that appear to be grasped. Furthermore, for these, there are six realms of consciousness that manifest in the nature of what appears to be grasped, namely eye consciousness, ear consciousness, nose consciousness, tongue consciousness, body consciousness, and mind consciousness. The support for these six realms of consciousness is the six realms of faculties, five of which are with form, and one is without form. For example, like a saffron flower in the eyeball, like a knot of wheat in the depths of the ear, like a probe at the root of the nose, like a half-moon separated by the size of a hair tip on the center of the tongue, the body faculty like the body, and the mind faculty when consciousness has just ceased. Thus, the objects, consciousnesses, and faculties of myself and all sentient beings, six sixes in total, are summarized as the eighteen realms. Thinking of the various things that exist in the realms of the ten directions, from focusing on the mind that appears in various ways, abandoning the speech of the mind, one should cultivate calm abiding. When one obtains extreme pliancy of body and mind, that is when calm abiding is perfected. Then, relying on that calm abiding, in that very calm abiding, these various images, just like these from the realm of form to the realm of mind, are called all dharmas. Thus, repeatedly distinguish and completely examine. By completely examining, one perfects insight. Then after that, with the mind focused on the image with conceptualization, with the mind focused equally on both, the continuous entry of uninterrupted recollection is called the path of union of calm abiding and insight. In the instructions of the Prajñāpāramitā, it says: The yogic ground focused on whatever exists.

First. Then the second is to generate the mind that appears in various ways, and to examine it closely in this way: The so-called "form" is merely a name. Up to the point where all phenomena are merely names, because names and meanings are extremely different, names do not exist as meanings. Because meanings are not clearly understood, they appear merely as names, and because names are not clearly understood, they also appear merely as meanings. Therefore, just as names are meaningless, form is merely a name and not real. Up to the point where all phenomena are also merely names. Worldly people suddenly combine names for the sake of the meaning of terms, and conceive of the established "form" as the meaning, and conceive of it as all phenomena. Therefore, from form to all phenomena, they do not exist as the meaning of names. Moreover, these are only mind. Although these meanings do not exist, they appear to arise due to the influence of the habit of clinging to the appearance of meaning as meaning, just as gamblers appear to gamble in dreams due to the influence of habit. Therefore, names are suddenly combined, and these established meanings are only mind. There is no object of grasping that is outside of the mind. Because there is no object of grasping, there is no grasper either. Therefore, one should ascertain that these various phenomena are inexpressible and are empty of the grasped and the grasper, and are only mind. Abandoning all mental expressions, one should gather one's mind on that very mind-only, and fix it closely and immovably. One should cultivate tranquility until one attains complete pliancy of body and mind. After attaining complete pliancy separately, Abiding in that very state, one should repeatedly analyze the images of the objects of samadhi. Moreover, these various phenomena are the eighteen elements, which are mind-only, devoid of self-nature, and empty of the grasped and the grasper. One should repeatedly and thoroughly analyze and fully examine them. Through full examination, one should cultivate insight until the body and mind are completely pliant. After that, with the mind focused on the image with conceptualization, with a mind of equality between the two, without interruption
