Thus, one should not be distracted from that constant state. If one knows that one has been distracted, one should quickly take it back again and gather the mind inward. The wise should cultivate it further and further, observing the qualities of samadhi, and should rejoice in it. Observing the faults of distraction, one should pacify outward distractions. When attachment, displeasure, etc., arise, one should subdue them in the same way. Then, with manifest effort, one should make the mind truly abide. One who is diligent in discipline, having shown respect, will attain effortless absorption. Thus it is said. Vipashyana is also said to have four aspects: how one distinguishes those dharmas, completely distinguishes them, completely discerns them, and completely examines them. Thus it is said. Among these, individually distinguishing how many things exist is distinguishing. Individually distinguishing how things truly exist is completely distinguishing. Non-discriminating attention combined with wisdom, grasping the aspect of signs, is completely discerning. Thorough examination is completely examining. The explanation of these is found in the Mahayana Abhidharma-samuccaya spoken by the noble Maitreya: What is vipashyana? It is how one distinguishes those dharmas, completely distinguishes them, completely discerns them, and completely examines them. Taking as an antidote the signs of bad states, and completely eliminating perversion, and closely taking the placing of the mind on what is not perverted, etc. Here, the meaning of these words is that bad states are the imprints of perversion, that is, the nature of the ability to generate perversion existing in the mind-stream. Its sign is when it is fully nourished, that is, the earlier and earlier attachments to perversion. When that is exhausted, bad states are exhausted, and perversion will not arise, because the sign is exhausted from familiarizing oneself with the antidote. That antidote is distinguishing, completely distinguishing. Therefore, these two are taught as closely taking the antidote to the signs of bad states. Completely discerning is taught as closely taking the complete elimination of perversion, because it truly distinguishe

Just as thoroughly distinguishing and completely eliminating the doubt of inversion, seeking with the mind in a wordless manner, thereby focusing especially. Therefore, this is called completely eliminating inversion. Thus, by this method, completely eliminating inversion, making it non-inverted, and in that non-inverted place, seeing as it is, settling the mind on this meaning, and making individual discriminations, is complete observation. Therefore, this is called the near attainment and manifestation of settling the mind on the non-inverted. Thus, the completion of the practice of the four types of insight meditation is liberation from the bonds of the lower realms. The completion of the practice of the nine types of calm abiding is liberation from the bonds of characteristics. Because the characteristic of inversion is the characteristic of the complete cessation of the meaning of inversion. As it is said: Calm abiding and insight, by practicing, from the lower realms and, the bonds of characteristics, the yogi, attains liberation. Thus it is said. The meaning of this verse should be appropriately applied, not according to sequence. Therefore, yoga and practice are synonymous, and the union of calm abiding and insight is a common classification of yoga. Here, for those who seek the yoga of the Perfection of Wisdom, the four yogas should be declared: the yoga that focuses on all existing things, the yoga that focuses on mind-only, the yoga that focuses on suchness, and the yoga that has no focus. Among these, the first should be declared: Here, the Bodhisattva, with the perfect wisdom of hearing and thinking, dwells alone in a solitary place, sits in the lotus position, the body neither extremely bent nor extremely extended, straightening the body upright, the mind neither extremely depressed nor extremely distracted, mindfulness and awareness are present. Gathering the naturally scattered eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and consciousness, abiding with awareness that includes appearances, thus focusing on various things, such as: blue and yellow colors, and rough and gentle sounds.
