Having abandoned, cultivate wisdom like the sky. The stream of mind will not be exhausted. The seeds of contaminated Dharma, the inexhaustible alaya-consciousness, appear from before. After exhaustion is the uncontaminated realm. The body of liberation is always like sunlight. Since it is the abode of all Buddhas and Dharmas, it is said to be the Dharmakaya of the protectors. Thus it is said. Becoming as it is, is the wisdom of thinking, and the wisdom arising from hearing and thinking has been explained. Having obtained these, one should cultivate the Perfection of Wisdom, as previously shown, and then the cultivation here will be discussed. The connection between hearing, thinking, and cultivation is twofold: connecting with reverence and connecting continuously. Extreme connection is the act of connecting. Connecting with diligence, joy, and delight is connecting with reverence, and connecting without interruption is connecting continuously. There are also three types of cultivation: calm abiding (shamatha), insight (vipashyana), and the cultivation of uniting calm abiding and insight. Among them, the image of what exists and what has become as it is, without discrimination, is the object of calm abiding. The image of what exists and what has become as it is, with discrimination, is the object of insight. Here, a Bodhisattva dwells alone in solitude, contemplating the meaning of what has been thought. Abandoning mental verbalization, one repeatedly contemplates the mind itself appearing as such, until the body and mind have not yet arisen with extreme pliancy, it is a mental activity that is in accordance with calm abiding. When it arises, then it is calm abiding. His body and mind, having attained nearness through extreme pliancy, abide in that very state. As for the meaning of what has been thought, one should separately examine it with particular fondness for the object of the inner samadhi image, until the body and mind have not yet arisen with extreme pliancy, it is a mental activity that is in accordance with insight. When it arises, then it is insight. Thereafter, focusing on the image with discrimination, when the mind itself

of explanation, and when both are experienced through the uninterrupted stream of attention, it is called the path of union of calm abiding and insight. In this regard, calm abiding and insight are a union, having connection and relationship, bound together and proceeding. Here, among the five obscurations, agitation and regret are obscurations to calm abiding, lethargy and sleep and doubt are obscurations to insight, and desire and malice are obscurations to both. When lethargy and sleep are completely eliminated, it is when calm abiding becomes completely pure; when agitation and regret become very clear, it is when insight becomes completely pure. Regarding this, the Blessed One taught nine aspects of calm abiding, namely, to place the mind inwardly as it is, to continuously place it, to completely place it, to closely place it, to tame it, to pacify it, to closely pacify it, to make it a single stream, and to place the mind evenly. Among these, first, withdrawing the mind from external objects, completely gathering it inward and binding it, is to place it inwardly. Then, continuously letting go and placing the mind that naturally moves, is to continuously place it. Then, realizing that one is distracted outward due to loss of mindfulness, again withdrawing and placing it on the mind, is to completely place it. Then, repeatedly gathering the mind from its naturally vast state, making it subtle, and placing it higher and higher, is to closely place it. Then, looking at the qualities of samadhi and rejoicing in it, is to tame it. Then, observing the faults of distraction, making the mind's outward scattering completely pacified, is to pacify it. Making the arising of attachment and displeasure, etc., pacified, is to closely pacify it. Naturally entering into one-pointedness, is to make it a single stream, from an incorrect state, making it correct through effort, is to make it a single stream, naturally accomplishing it through habit, naturally entering it, correctly obtaining freedom and holding it, is to evenly place the mind. Thus it is said, in the Ornament of the Sutras: The mind is applied to the object.
