If it is established by valid cognition that it is merely imputed, then actually harming its own nature, it will consequently establish harming pots and so on. Because it is not imputed, exclusion is not possible, because this Yogacara system is extremely difficult to refute. What is stated here is that appearance is not imputed, nor is there imputation, it is not truly existent, nor is it conventionally existent, like emptiness itself. This is the reason of self-nature, either a contradictory pervasion or a non-apprehension of the pervader. If appearance were to become substantially existent, then in the Holy Lankavatara Sutra it says: 'Great wisdom, all dharmas are unborn, because existence and non-existence are unborn.' What is the meaning of this? The meaning of this is that it must be ascertained, namely: the constantly existing realm of dharma and the constantly non-existent completely imputed are the unborn of non-birth, but it is not that the nature of consciousness is also unborn. Therefore, in that very sutra it says: 'Cause and condition are reversed, and the agent is also prohibited, I have said unborn, and then established in mind-only.' It means that by prohibiting causes, conditions, and agents other than mind, and establishing them in mind-only, this is the meaning of the word 'unborn.' Nagarjuna also said: 'No dharmas whatsoever are born, nor is there any cessation, only the flow of consciousness, which is birth and destruction.' Then, in the Holy Sal Tree King Sutra and others, it says: 'Therefore, this sprout is not made by itself, not made by others, not made by both, nor is it born from no cause.' What does this mean? Its meaning is that it is not made by cause alone, nor made by condition alone, nor made by both, because it is an action preceded by intelligence and there is no agent. Nothing exists, because it is not seen, and because it is unreasonable. In the Holy Lankavatara Sutra it says: 'All formations are momentary, where is there an abiding action? Whatever these are, they are birth itself, the action itself is said to be the agent.'

Thus it is said that the seed does not think, "I shall produce a sprout," nor does it exist as the entity that produces the sprout. Because there exists an independent action that does not depend on cause and condition, therefore this is a refutation. Merely becoming cause and effect is not a refutation, because (the Buddha) said that it is not born from a causeless origin. Therefore, (the Buddha) also said, "Because it arises from that, this exists, therefore this arises; because this is born, this is born," because this shows that the effect arises after the cause exists, so it becomes accordance, the non-apprehension that establishes it, and direct perception. Because the determination of "when it exists" is made, it shows that the effect does not arise when the cause does not exist, therefore it also speaks of reversal and the non-apprehension that establishes it. Just so, in effect, it also refutes actions that are considered beforehand. The so-called "this is born," because it depends on other causes and conditions, it also refutes action. Thus, commonly, cause and effect are established in the continuum, so those particularities are also established, and also change from the two views. Because those two views, through the distinction of objects, become the three: direct perception and non-apprehension. If direct perception is non-conceptual, momentary, and unique, how does it completely determine cause and effect? Just as the later determination, which arises from the power of experiencing the previous previous ones, makes it manifest. Some Madhyamikas say: What is renowned in the world is conventional, and external objects are also renowned in the world, just like mind and mental factors, that is also conventionally existent. But in the ultimate truth, just as the sword's edge cannot cut itself, the self-cognition of mind and mental factors is contradictory, and both of us agree that other-cognition is merely delusion. Therefore, in order to realize the ultimate truth by exhausting delusion, the minds and mental factors of the Buddhas are completely exhausted. When those do not arise, one attains the experience of following the ultimate truth of the non-arising of all phenomena.
