Therefore, it is precisely because these two do not exist and the consciousness is empty of duality that it denies "not this." If it is a negation of non-existence, then it is not merely negating one thing; if that were the case, it would become a conceptual construct, otherwise it would become a negation of "not this." Therefore, the ultimate truth, as it has been shown, is merely the negation of "not this." Because it is the nature of the non-veridical conceptual construct, it is not different from it, nor is it different by way of a difference in characteristics. Whatever is the unique characteristic of phenomena, that is not itself, because it is unique. This is one of the differences in characteristics of these. Moreover, individual characteristics are apprehended by signs, while emptiness is the cessation of all signs; this is the second difference in characteristics of these. The very nature of the two, which is merely emptiness, pervades all phenomena without any distinction, and is called constant and unchanging. The false stains of names and signs, and the obscuring stains of being deluded by signs, are adventitious stains on it because they are not its nature, while the nature of phenomena is intrinsically pure. The stains arise from attachment to the appearance of conceptual constructs, and therefore can be removed and are removable, so they are also adventitious. If one reverently cultivates for a long time, when cultivation reaches perfection, a clear appearance will arise, just as women and so forth appear in the continuous thoughts of desire, sorrow, and fear, and so on. All these phenomena are merely these things that are established by valid cognition, namely, mind-only, emptiness with signs, and emptiness without signs; the yogi has become accustomed to these four. Among these, the practitioners of yoga and also the Madhyamikas consider the fourth of yoga, in which all phenomena are emptiness as the object, without any object of focus, extremely non-manifest, uniquely stainless and limitless, and the appearance like space to be transcendent wisdom. Thus, the venerable Nagarjuna also said:

Explaining the great elements and so on. It is perfectly present in consciousness. If wisdom is separate from it, why isn't it a reversed conceptualization? Thus it is said. Like this, the Yogācāra believes that the mere clarity of the inherent nature of all dharmas is existent as substance. The Madhyamaka does not accept that substance either, understanding this difference as merely a name. Therefore, without basis, the Yogācāras and the Madhyamakas arguing together is extremely bad. Here, the verses are: Those who, together with whom, do not see that very thing, their practice here is all the same. When that very thing is seen, the stain of darkness is completely exhausted, and wisdom also becomes one. Here, the mind is set on hating the Yogācāra of the supreme root. These holders of the supreme Madhyamaka, with minds set on arguing, why do they argue and extremely denigrate? For them, those Madhyamakas who say that external objects exist, and who say that consciousness has aspects, have already been refuted as being outside of the scriptures and valid cognition. Only the Mind-Only school, which says there are no aspects, remains. Why do they consider clarity to be false? Because the appearances of blue and so on are not different from falsity. If it is said that it is like blue and so on, then the absence of fabricated difference is not established. However, if it is merely non-difference, then there will be uncertainty in turning away from the dissimilar side, and it will become indefinite. The nature of imputation exists for what is not real and what becomes real, just like the cow itself, and self and so on, and their thoughts. Or, due to the delusion of emptiness, it will also become indefinite. If you say that that itself is also false, then, while clearly seeing blue and so on, the wisdom that sees emptiness will also become a fallacy. Falsity is imputed by delusion, because clarity is the inherent nature of clarity itself, without parts, and is established by direct perception. For things, this inherent nature is established by valid cognition for both. Because this inherent nature is established, what is not fabricated and what is not false are established. Falsity and what is not real, and delusion
