Thus, it is said, "Born on the earth," and so forth. Those who have a mind-stream of afflictions, virtue, and non-outflow, they are called "Born on the earth." It is said that in the formless realm, since beings have abandoned desire for form, there can be no form and its consciousness. Only mental consciousness remains. When it has the nature of afflictions, etc., since there is no fruition, there is no substance of fruition. Therefore, sentient beings will also become those who do not possess fruition. But this is not desirable. Therefore, in order to establish the fruition of sentient beings, it must be undoubtedly acknowledged that there is another consciousness, which is to be explained. Here, too, if something exists, then it should be understood that the connection of "birth," etc., which was just explained. In this way, in the formless realm, the establishment of sentient beings as fruition only occurs when there is another consciousness. This fault also exists for the Vaibhashikas, because they say that sentient beings are neither obscured nor predicted. Furthermore, it is also necessary to mention the word "peak of existence." The meaning is that if in the formless realm other than the peak of existence, if there is death, then non-fruition will also become sentient beings. But in the peak of existence, for those who do not regress and have exhausted their outflows, when the non-outflow mind of the sphere of nothingness manifests, that is also impossible, so samsara will be cut off. This is also not desirable, so here too, it is the same as the previous connection. This fault is universally present for all those who do not acknowledge consciousness. Here, if the Vaibhashikas object, saying that this fault only exists for those who do not acknowledge other non-associated formations other than mind and mental factors, but for those who acknowledge that there are similar non-associated formations, this inference will not apply here. Therefore, in order to refute the opponent's loophole, "similarity," etc., is taught, that is, how similarity, etc., is impossible.

Such a thing has already been extensively explained in the treatises of the Abhidharmakośa, so it will not be elaborated here; this is a concluding remark. Therefore, phrases like "because of that" and so on are conclusions made after extensive reasoning. Phrases like "that itself" and so on indicate that the establishment of the Vipāka-vijñāna (resultant consciousness) is also proven because it is widely known among other predecessors. Those called the "Red-robed Monastic Order" refer to the venerable Sthavira school, who use the term "consciousness of a branch of existence" only for the Ālaya-vijñāna (store consciousness). Others say, "It is called the root consciousness," referring to the venerable Mahāsāṃghika school, who also use the term "root consciousness" within their own school. Then, phrases like "Well, its..." are others refuting the teacher, i.e., if there is another Ālaya-vijñāna other than eye consciousness and so on, then one must state what its object is and what its aspect is, because there is no consciousness without an object or aspect; this is their thought. The statement "object and aspect are not cut off" is the teacher's response to them, i.e., for something that is always of one taste in the nature of Vipāka (result), and which is to be known by inference, if there are unclear and uncertain objects and aspects, then it should be said that way; this is a concluding remark. If one says, "How can it be both consciousness and similar to it?" this is said because others are trying to show that such a consciousness is impossible. Phrases like "That is Nirodha-samāpatti (cessation attainment)" and so on indicate that the unclear movement of consciousness is also acknowledged by others. And "with others who say there is consciousness" refers to monks like Vasubandhu and others who do not acknowledge the Ālaya-vijñāna. "Similar" means that this matter of contention with them is similar; this is a concluding remark. Then, saying "Then it..." and so on is by others, i.e., if from eye consciousness and so on
