Explanation of Karma-siddhi Losang Ngangtsul Explanation of Karma-siddhi Losang Ngangtsul In Indian language: Karma Siddhā Ṭīkā. In Tibetan: Explanation of Karma-siddhi. Volume One. Homage to the noble youthful Manjushri! Completely eliminating the net of conceptualization, Definitely showing the meaning for others, Being the sole friend of all sentient beings, I pay homage to the glorious Manjushri. This is an explanation of the accomplishment of karma. Whatever is desired to be explained briefly, For the sake of making them happy, In short, I will give that explanation. In the sutra, it says, "There are three karmas," and so on. It is reasonable to explain the treatise with its necessity. But this one has no necessity. Therefore, for the time being, it is not even permissible to compose it with a preconceived notion. Then, how can the explanation be good? There is also a connection to this: one should not compose what is unnecessary with a preconceived notion, like a treatise examining the teeth of a crow. This treatise is also unnecessary, because the pervasiveness is not obvious, since composing it is inherently necessary. Therefore, others object to the treatise, saying that there is no need to explain it here, and that the reason is not established. Why is that? Because, in this way, there is a need to ascertain without error the nature of the three karmas, such as body. That is because all other proponents of external existence misunderstand it. Therefore, the proponent of internal knowledge will accomplish this treatise by refuting their views and showing his own intention. The Blessed One said in the sutra, "There are three karmas," and quoting this is the point of contention. In order to show one's own essence without reversing it by eliminating the views of others. First, by saying "Some say," and so on, he presents the views of others. By specifically pointing out their views and refuting them from each aspect, one can easily understand one's own view later. First, it should be understood that this is the view of the Vaibhashikas, one's own.

Those who are misled by what is said in the lineage of the Lamas say things like, 'The karma done by the body is the karma of the body.' The summarization of these three karmas should be understood separately. The summarization of 'The karma done by the body is the karma of the body' is the third, meaning it relies on the body, because that is not the nature of action. 'Speech itself is the karma of speech,' the summarization of this is special, because there is a saying that sound is of speech, because that is the nature of action. 'Separately' means each one. 'Both also' means the karma of body and speech. 'Manifestation and non-manifestation,' regarding this, because it is manifestation, it is manifestation, meaning that within the understanding of other terms, it can show the existing thought. Manifestation in other aspects, even if it is the nature of form and action, but because it does not manifest to others, it is non-manifestation. 'The karma that is in accordance with the mind is the karma of the mind,' here too, the summarization of words is the third. Because the mind is not the nature of action. Because it is impossible to be karma itself, the thought that accompanies it is karma. Regarding this, here it should be considered, this is the teacher raising a question, in order to establish its position, and then refute it later. Temporarily, the manifestation of the body, etc., appears widely, therefore the Vaibhashikas will establish their own position. Temporarily, the manifestation of the body, the word 'temporarily' is to cut off other manifestations. Regarding 'born from the mind that focuses on it,' the word 'it' refers to shape. Whatever has the object of shape, such as hands, that is focusing on it. It is focusing on it and is also mind, therefore it is the mind that focuses on it, it is the entering mind. Because it arises from that, it is born from the mind that focuses on it. What is that? It should be connected to the manifestation of shape.

In Tibetan, the mind that arises from all actions such as prostrating to stupas, etc., its object is the future physical action, which is called the shape of 'discernment,' and not others. Therefore, the discernment that arises from such a mind is born from it, which is the meaning shown. The term 'whose' refers to the one who refutes. Among them, there are some who are hesitant, but they are not masters, but those who say it belongs to the body, which is the view of the Vaibhashikas. If it is said to belong to the body, this is the refuter's argument, their idea is that whatever distinction is shown, in order to understand the meaning, there is no other proof besides it, so how can it be said that it is an action done by the body? Saying 'of the body,' in fact, both terms do not exist. The term 'body' is used because it is a component of the whole, therefore it appears widely, and the Vaibhashikas establish these two terms as the tenets of their school. The body is the combination of the four elements—earth, water, fire, and wind—and what is formed from the four elements, which refers to the entire body. Action refers to temporary existences such as hands, isn't it? How can it be said to be of the body? The statement 'of the body' is when the previous party digs a hole in their mind, and then connects it with the mind, saying that it exists in the whole, and so on. If it is said, 'What is the need for arising from the mind that focuses on it?' The questioner here thinks that because it arises from the mind, if it is sufficient to only explain 'arising from the mind,' why is it necessary to say 'focusing on it'? To this refutation and examination, the Vaibhashikas respond with 'lips, etc.,' meaning that the shape of the lips, etc., does not arise from the mind that focuses on shape. Saying 'lips, etc.,' includes opening and smiling, etc. Why not? Therefore, it is said, 'Because it arises from the mind that focuses on words.' It means that saying such words is because it is expressed with this word.
