And I and the dharmas are proximately imputed to the aspect of the apprehended. If they were actually there, why would they be proximately imputed? That which is not in something is proximately imputed to it, like calling a foolish person an ox. Although not an ox, one proximately imputes 'ox' to a foolish person. If proximate imputation is fabrication, how can it actually become an object of things? Thus, in order to preclude the actual object of proximate imputation as self and dharmas, it concludes. Thus, it is said, "Because in the self-nature of consciousness and also in external objects, there are no self and dharmas," and so forth. In this way, by showing such an aspect, self and dharmas are not actually present outside of the apprehended aspect of consciousness and consciousness. Therefore, self and dharmas are merely conceptual constructs. In ultimate reality, they do not exist anywhere. Therefore, we do not accept the extreme view that what is knowable is also substantial, like consciousness. In order to refute the other extreme view, it is said, "Proximate imputation is," and so forth. Proximate imputation is like this: it is impossible to have many bases. Therefore, it is necessary to affirm that the consciousness in which the proximate imputation of self and dharmas arises is substantial. In that case, consciousness, like what is knowable, is merely conventional. If one admits that it does not exist ultimately, one cannot endure the scrutiny of reason. Why is it said that one cannot endure the scrutiny of reason? Because even in conventional truth, there would be no entity. To refute this, it is said, "If there is no basis, it is not permissible as conventional truth." Like this, without a basis, it cannot be conventional truth; one must rely on something to impute something. Otherwise, because there is no certainty, it would follow that everything could be imputed to everything. Therefore, in order to avoid the fault of being too extreme, one must affirm some basis for conventional truth. And that basis is consciousness, therefore one must affirm that consciousness is substantial. "Without a basis" is from "without a foundation" to "reason." Above

In order to conclude the discussion, therefore, both of these absolute assertions are unreasonable, so they should be abandoned, as the scholars say. Like this, both of these views are unreasonable, therefore, both of these absolute assertions are unreasonable, so they should be abandoned, the scholars say, thus explaining, secretly seeking support from the scholars apart from oneself. Thus, after refuting the absolute assertions, in order to state one's own view, therefore, all knowable things are of the nature of the completely imputed, so there is no entity, as it is said. Because in this way, the knowable is only the self-nature of consciousness, so there is no entity of self and phenomena in the external realm, and without a basis, it is also impossible in the conventional, therefore, all knowable things are of the nature of the completely imputed, so they do not exist in the form of an entity. Like this, without a basis there is no conventional, therefore, consciousness is interdependent arising, so it is substantially existent, this should be acknowledged. How should it be understood that consciousness is interdependent arising? Consciousness is interdependent arising, and so on, as it is said. Consciousness is interdependent arising, which is indicated by the word "transformation," like this, obtaining the self-nature of the result that is different from the cause is transformation. Thus it is indicated. Thus, directly negating the self and phenomena, and because the outsiders assert external objects, therefore, in order to refute, how can consciousness itself appear in the form of an object without external objects? As it is said. If there are no external objects, such as form, how can consciousness itself appear in the form of objects such as form? The proponent of tenets says, external objects are, and so on, as it is said, like this, when the external object produces the consciousness of my image, it is considered as the objective condition of consciousness, but not merely as the efficient cause. If it becomes the objective condition only by the efficient cause, then, the cause and the immediately preceding cause

And, The independent cause and becoming without distinction, like this, those are merely established as functions. If this is also merely established as a function, then, at that time, it will become indistinguishable from those. That is like this, for whom there is only function and only produces its own image, that is considered a realm with two natures. If it is considered a realm only because of function, then the immediate cause and other causes will also become objects of perception. Even if it has become a realm with two natures, what will this become? The five aggregates of consciousness are focused on accumulation, and so on. The five aggregates of consciousness are focused on accumulation, others think so. Like this, those should be recognized as the image of accumulation. The word accumulation refers to aggregation. Therefore, the five aggregates of consciousness are said to appear as a rational image. If it becomes the image of accumulation, what fault will there be? Therefore, accumulation is only the aggregation of parts, and there is nothing else, and so on. The accumulated parts are only aggregation, and there is no accumulation other than that. How is it not? If those parts are removed, and so on, like this, if the parts are removed one by one, the consciousness of the image of accumulation will not arise. If there is any substance called aggregation there, then, at that time, even if the parts are removed one by one, the wisdom of the image of aggregation will arise, the existence of the substance with parts is repeatedly refuted by the teachers. Thus, having refuted the existence of the substance of aggregation, in order to conclude, therefore, without external objects, consciousness arises as the image of accumulation. Because of that, accumulation is only the aggregation of parts, and there is nothing else, and also the consciousness of the image of accumulation is experienced, therefore, without the meaning of external accumulation, by the power of the completely matured habit of elaboration, consciousness is established to arise as the image of accumulation. Even if the substance of aggregation does not exist and cannot be an object of perception, the consciousness of the image of the aggregation of atoms will become its object of perception.
