Regarding the wisdom that is without and without obstruction, that which sometimes enters and sometimes does not enter is called attachment because it depends on other causes. That which enters without depending on other causes is called non-attachment. That which enters sometimes and does not enter sometimes is called obstruction. That which enters into everything is called non-obstruction. Thus, for the time being, the necessity of what is needed and needed again has been explained in one way. In order to show the necessity of what is needed and needed again in another way, it is also said that those who are manifestly attached to the Dharma and the individual (Sanskrit: pudgala), and so on. Some speakers are manifestly attached to the aggregates, elements, sense bases, and other investigated dharmas as substances. Some are manifestly attached to the individual. Those who are manifestly attached to the Dharma and the individual in this way do not fully understand the nature of mind-only as it is. Therefore, for them, it is shown that there is no self in the Dharma and the individual. In order to gradually lead them to mind-only and its results, for the purpose of showing the absence of self in the Dharma and the individual, the treatise is composed. Mind-only and its results refer to the mind and mental factors that are free from the apprehended and the apprehender, which are mind-only. Its result is the Joyful Ground and so on. In order to gradually enter, first listen to the Thirty Verses and other treatises that serve as methods for eliminating the apprehended and the apprehender. After listening, then think about it with correct attention. After thinking, then, starting from the establishment of mindfulness, which is the first step in eliminating the apprehended, practice until acceptance. Then, after eliminating the apprehended, because there is no apprehended, there is no apprehender. Therefore, at the time of the supreme Dharma, the apprehender is also eliminated. Yogis, in order to eliminate the apprehended and the apprehender in this way, because each obscuration of the Dharmadhatu has been separated, they are combined with the Joyful Ground and so on. In this way, one gradually enters into mind-only and its results. In order to show the necessity of what is needed and needed again in another way, or, just as knowledge is known, so is the knowable.

Thus, and so on, it was said. Some proponents of external objects think that just as consciousness exists as a substance, so too does the knowable exist as a substance. Some Madhyamikas think that just as the knowable exists conventionally but not ultimately, so too does consciousness exist only conventionally but not ultimately. Therefore, in order to refute these two extreme assertions and to demonstrate the selflessness of persons and phenomena, this treatise is composed. The term "these two extreme assertions" refers to the doctrines of those who assert that everything exists and those who assert that everything does not exist. Thus, the purpose of composing this treatise is stated. Now, one might ask, how can one understand the selflessness of phenomena and persons? To this end, the phrase "attachment to self and phenomena" and so on is spoken. This means, in short, where do the various forms of attachment to self and phenomena arise? The word "ni" means "in this way." It is to show that the meaning is extracted from the words because it is accompanied by doubt. The phrase "in the world and in treatises" and so on is spoken, meaning, in short, from the world and from treatises, what various forms of attachment to self and phenomena arise? One might ask, what should be examined? To this end, the phrase "that is the transformation of consciousness" is spoken, meaning, in short, that arises in the apprehended aspect of consciousness. One might ask, with what should the word "that" be connected? To this end, the phrase "therefore, with attachment to self and phenomena" is spoken, meaning that the word "that" should be connected with attachment to self and phenomena. From this, the meaning of the words arises: whatever various forms of attachment to self and phenomena arise from the world and from treatises, that arises in the apprehended aspect of consciousness itself; attachment does not arise in external selves or phenomena. Therefore, one should understand the selflessness of persons and phenomena. In order to explain the meaning of the limbs by means of commentary, the phrase "by attachment to self and phenomena" and so on is spoken, meaning, by what means is there attachment to self?
