The commentary on the Thirty Verses is named as such because it is both thirty in number and a treatise on consciousness-only. This is a combination of words. Because that treatise has thirty verses, this is the Thirty Verses. Because it is a treatise that completely reveals consciousness-only, it is a treatise on consciousness-only. Composing it means composing the Thirty Verses on Consciousness-Only. That is to say, in order to non-perversely show the lack of self in persons and phenomena to those sentient beings who do not understand the lack of self in persons and phenomena, and to those who have doubts, and to those who have become inverted, the Thirty Verses on Consciousness-Only were composed, and it will be declared as such. Why did you think of showing the lack of self in persons and phenomena? Therefore, it is said, "Also, the showing of the lack of self in persons and phenomena," and so on. Whatever here shows the lack of self in persons and phenomena, it is for the sake of abandoning the afflictive obscurations and the obscurations to knowledge. Showing the lack of self in persons is for the sake of abandoning the afflictive obscurations. Showing the lack of self in phenomena is for the sake of abandoning the obscurations to knowledge. The words should be combined as "abandoning the afflictions and the obscurations to knowledge," and in short, it is abandoning them. Showing the lack of self in persons is for the sake of abandoning the afflictions, what is that like? Therefore, it is said that afflictions such as desire arise from the view of self. For example, desire and so on arise from the view of the aggregates. Therefore, attachment and hatred and so on arise towards things that are in accordance with and not in accordance with the correct following view of "I" or "mine." Abandoning the view of self and what belongs to self, being free from desire, like wood and sandalwood, attachment and anger and so on do not arise towards anything. If desire and so on arise from what is called "self," what is that like? Therefore, it is said, "Understanding the lack of self in persons is," and so on. For example, desire and so on arise from the view of self, the lack of self in persons

Understanding it is the direct antidote to clinging to "I." Therefore, if one sees the absence of self in a person, one can abandon clinging to "I." If one abandons it, one will abandon all the afflictions such as desire that arise from it. Therefore, teaching the absence of self in a person is for the sake of abandoning afflictions. If someone thinks, "How can abandoning the absence of self in phenomena abandon the obscurations to knowledge?" To this, the sutra says, "Knowing the absence of self in phenomena also..." etc. Thus, knowing the absence of self in phenomena is the antidote to the obscurations to knowledge. Therefore, knowing the absence of self in phenomena will abandon the obscurations to knowledge. If someone thinks, "What is the purpose of abandoning afflictions and obscurations to knowledge?" To this, the sutra says, "Abandoning afflictions and obscurations to knowledge also..." etc. Abandoning afflictions such as desire is for the sake of attaining liberation. Abandoning the obscurations to knowledge is for the sake of attaining omniscience. If someone thinks, "Abandoning afflictions is for the sake of attaining liberation, how is that?" To this, the sutra says, "Abandoning afflictions is..." etc. Thus, afflictions such as desire obstruct the attainment of liberation. Therefore, if one abandons desire etc., one will attain liberation. Then, what is the nature of the obscurations to knowledge like? How can abandoning it lead to the attainment of omniscience? To this, the sutra says, "Therefore, the obscurations to knowledge are..." etc. That which obstructs wisdom from seeing all knowable things, the non-afflictive ignorance, and the habitual tendencies of clinging to the grasper and the grasped, that is considered to be the obscurations to knowledge here. If one abandons such obscurations to knowledge, then, for all knowable things, both worldly and transworldly, wisdom that is without attachment and without obstruction will arise. Therefore, if one abandons the obscurations to knowledge, one will attain omniscience. The so-called "aspects of all knowable things" refers to all the aspects that should be known, namely impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and absence of self. These are the so-called aspects of all knowable things. Attachment
